| Electronic Fences? My apologies if I am posting in the wrong section but I thought this was the right place for a question regarding electronic fences. Anyone use them? Any recommendations? My 12 week old would live outside if I would let him, I live on the first floor in a condo and don't have a fenced in yard for him to run freely in. He paws at the screen on the patio and wants to go out and run around constantly. I know the breeder was letting him out in her back yard while potty training, I let him run around out back in the large grassy area off the leash to play a few times. He is starting to be able to run quite a bit faster now and I do not allow him off the leash anymore now that he is leash trained. Obviously it is not safe to let him run around without a leash but he is relentless with pawing at the screen and really likes to run around. I was thinking that an electronic fence would make it possible for him to run around and stay confined in a designated area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

| Absolutely not! Not only is it mean and can effect the health of small dogs it does not keep bigger dogs from attacking him, people from stealing him or hurting him or him taking the shock to get out but not back in. Also he should not be in an area where other dogs go to until he has all of his shots or you risk him getting very very sick. Terriers especially should not be off leash unless in a good and safe fenced in yard.

| He's not in an area where other dogs go to, I am very aware of the dangers of walking him in areas where other dogs go until he's had all of his shots. I wish he would go on the pee pads like my 8 yr old but he thinks it is a place to lie down. I would never let him run around without me being right there for fear of someone taking him. I don't want him being zapped either so I guess he will have to get used to not being allowed to run around without a leash. I won't even consider dog parks. |

| Prior to fencing in part of my property, I used a long training leash, so ZoE had more freedom. You can get them in 20-50ft lengths, so it gives your pup plenty of area to roam, while still safe.

| Have you tried a retractable leash? Or what they call a training lead that like a really long leash?

| Does anyone know if they make these long-leads extra lightweight? The only ones I've ever seen were bulky and heavy and Billi was afraid to do anything with it clipped to her. I know these fences are really controversial here, but I've been curious about them because while 9/10 times, Billi is great in the front yard and doesn't run off, every so often a neighbor will catch her eye and she darts and doesn't stop. She doesn't even look both ways before crossing the street! I'm actually seriously not worried about any dogs getting to her- she's never out for very long, or when other dogs are out. I am seriously worried about her recall and darting whenever something sets her off. And yes, before you mention it- we've trained her on this over and over. She always does it perfectly for the trainers, or for us in front of the trainer. The problem is getting her to stop every time. So long story short: is there ever an instance where it's ok to use one of these to keep her from getting hit by a car?

Personally, I don't think shock collars are ever ok on small dogs. Would you strap one around the neck of a 10lb infant and shock it if it crawls out of bounds? I know people do it. My last home was in a restricted subdivision and fences weren't allowed (other than immediately around in-ground swimming pools, which were the only kind of pools allowed). I had a pool installed and built my fencing specifically, so my yorkie had an area inside the fence...sneaky! My neighbor directly across the street had a chihuahua that was let out front of their house daily, and he wore a shock collar every day for the ten years I lived there. He never went near the boundary even when people walked right in front of his home.

I'll have to put more research into the long leads. I've searched the bigbox stores sites to no avail- Billi's so little that I have to be careful of the weight of any lead, but a long lead has been extra difficult to find.

Yeah, like I said, we've worked with her on this a lot over the last 18 months, and since she does it correctly in front of the trainer, they don't seem to believe us that she isn't 100% when they aren't around. Sure, you'll say go invest in another trainer, but that's money we don't have right now, so it's worth asking about alternatives. Since we rent, we can't invest in a fence in our front yard, but I'll look into putting something on our porch for her.

Can you build a fence where you live? When I moved to my new wee house, I built my own fence over a few weekends. I understand about the not stopping and coming on command when it's crucial. Shortly after I built my fence my Mum was over helping me do yard work. She'd taken some fallen branches up to my firepit, opened the gate at the top of my fenced area, and forgot to close it when she then walked around the side of the fence back to the garage. Later that day I let ZoE out, and next thing I see is her on the other side of the fence! I live on a main road now, so I was totally freaking out! And ZoE would not come to me or stop when i called her, even though we'd successfully done tons of training on it. She ran all the way around the fence as was cowering by the door to my breezeway by the time I'd ran all the way around to the front of the house. Thankfully she was ok. Since then I've installed a self closing feature like I had on my prior swimming pool gate.
