Default New Yorkie Owner

Just wanted to say hello and I will be on this forum allot to learn more about the breed. I may have committed the ultimate sin and got a yorkie prior to allot of study but the first 5 days have been fun.

Our family includes myself, wife and 6 year old. Wanted to get a dog for awhile.... last dog I had was 5 years ago a border collie/aussie sheep mix. Loved him but we are in a home with no real yard so was thinking of a smaller dog. Went to to a couples home for dinner for the first time they used to breed yorkies and they had kept 1 an 18 month old named Max. Do to there life changing we took him in for a trial run.

It's allot different having a small dog I have a allot to learn but so far I really enjoy having him around. Max looks very cute and he does not bark allot. He seems moody by that I mean tail up all excited in the morning late at night when going out on leash tail down very timid..... but hey aren't we all like that? At any rate I will be looking in this forum allot searching for things to help me just wanted to say hello....

Some things I will be looking for....

Max was taught to go on a pee pad. I don't mind that but want to teach him to go out side(ok maybe I do mind). Hopefully that will work.... so far he has been able to poop in the am and some times at night he pees but often it is for marking territory. When he does go on the bad it is pee 1 time he pooped.... wondering if I take away the pad?

Do i need to put a bow in his hair to keep his hair out of his eyes? I like the no bow look lol

I have left him up stairs in the house with his bed only... no pen... so far so good do you all do that? He has only been home alone for 2 to 3 hours so far

Do you all free feed? I liked giving out 1 meal a day.... looks like a cup of food a day?

When it gets cold out side like below freezing can he still be let out to go pee/poop with a jacket on? what do some of you do?

Trying to get him to sit lol he seems to come when called because he is getting very attached wondering how training will go with him.... I am trying to get him to sit on command right now but he just looks around or at me.... wanting the treat in my hand.... I know it will be allot of work.

So he has not been fixed yet. When on lap he starts licking allot last night he started humping my arm.... I said no and put/pushed him on the floor he ran back to his bed and looked at me till I called him over after a few minutes.... have to figure out how to stop licking I guess....

At any rate look forward to learning!

Just some basics ...does he have up to date vaccines? (Dhppv/kennel cough/rabies) obviously he's not neutered lol I would say you are doing the right thing by sending him on a little time out when he does the unsavory act. ;-) it is possible to outside potty train a dog who is pee pad trained. Just may take some time. Same with vice versa. A few hours home alone at first sounds ok....have u noticed any separation anxiety behaviors ( chewing etc) sounds like u r asking all the right questions. I'm sure you will get tons more advice! And no matter how or where you got him...he's with you now! So no worries about being flogged! Winnie is my first yorkie....just a baby. 16 weeks today. And it's definately an experience! Yorkies are great. If he has hair....brush him every day! I just learned this lesson the hard way! I'm bow training winnie but of course she is a girl....I know some trim their boys hair to keep it out of their eyes. It can cause a lot of irritation and goopiness...sometimes infection with the eyes. That's a main reason for doing the top knots. Congrats on your new little guy!

Welcome to Yorkie Talk, Tom. Congratulations on the new addition to your life. I have a Max too.

How much does he weigh? This will determine how much food is appropriate. Was a free feeder before? Whatever system works best for him is fine. I feed my guys 3 meals a day because they wouldn't work well with free feeding.

You can re-train a pad user to be outdoor only. The key is to give him plenty of opportunity to potty outdoors and praise him each time he gets it right. Supervision and limiting roaming freedom around the house during training also helps. You might want to leave the pad out for backup, but whatever you decide, be consistent. If the pad disappears and reappears, or changes location, this might be confusing.

Marking territory is often a problem with unneutered dogs. It is very difficult to train this out of them. You can either neuter or use a belly band as back up.

Share some photos of your Max.

Welcome! I am guessing he is now your dog? First thing I would do is a vet check do a fecal and blood work as well as make sure his vaccines are up to date, I would also set up an appointment to get him fixed just because it's better for him. You might could try putting the potty pads outside on the grass to get him used to going outside and give him lots of praise and a treat when he does go outside. You don't have to use a bow you can have him groomed into a puppy cut like I do my dog. It is important though that you keep it out of his eyes whether you put it in a bow or cut it short. My problem with feeding once a day is would you like to only eat once a day? I free feed because my dog is a picker and does not eat a lot at one time. I think he at least needs to be feed twice a day. Mine always goes potty outside freezing snow you name it. She does wear jackets and sweaters otherwise she will shake. Yorkies don't have under coats like most other dogs and there hair is like human hair not fur so they get colder easier. Good luck!

Hi just got my first male yorkie.

Boo (my yorky). Biggest problem was not going outside for nothing. No matter how long we sat with him outside . He would hold it till we went in. So we kept a belly band on. Works great. But we took him for walks and he started gong. Each time i praised him a lot and rubbed him while saying good boy potty. Tonight i told him to go potty and he did.

With yours being timid in evening make sure hes not glycimic. Keep nutracal because they can drop in blood sugar.

Ready in the library here was a blessing to me.

Well at 18 months he is way to old to be having hypoglycemic episodes unless something is wrong health wise.

When he does go on the bad it is pee 1 time he pooped.... wondering if I take away the pad? I really don't have any advice re: going outside as my dog uses a litterbox with a pee pad in it and this works for us. However, we have tried to regulate when our dog eats which then allows us to predict, with some certainty, when he's likely to pee/poop! This is useful info for times when we know we'll be out for longer than normal etc. For example, my dog will not pee if he's already pooped in his box so a predictable evacuation schedule helps to avoid issues!

Do i need to put a bow in his hair to keep his hair out of his eyes? I like the no bow look lol I rarely put a bow in my dogs hair so its a personal preference but its a nice thing to do if you are going to keep his coat long as, otherwise, hair will get in his eyes and hair can carry bacteria which could then infect his eyes. I keep my dog in a short cut to avoid issues such as above.

Do you all free feed? I liked giving out 1 meal a day.... looks like a cup of food a day? As Maximo has already kindly pointed out, the weight of your dog will be a great guide as to how much you should be feeding a day and then it also depends on the food guidelines. More info, like weight and feeding history, may allow us to assist further. Just some initial info for comparison, my dog weighs 3lbs 14oz (thought he'd reached four lbs the other day but think he may have been constipated..ha) and eats 45g or 1.5 oz Arcana/day.

Trying to get him to sit lol he seems to come when called because he is getting very attached wondering how training will go with him.... I am trying to get him to sit on command right now but he just looks around or at me.... wanting the treat in my hand.... I know it will be allot of work. When my dog was a puppy, I gently pushed his little butt down, commanded "sit" and made him retain that position for 1 second, treat, then the next night, 2 seconds, treat, then 3 seconds and so on as I found that, even though he grasped the concept very quickly, he slammed his butt on the ground for a nanosecond and wanted a treat. Very smart dogs!

So he has not been fixed yet. When on lap he starts licking allot last night he started humping my arm.... I said no and put/pushed him on the floor he ran back to his bed and looked at me till I called him over after a few minutes.... have to figure out how to stop licking I guess.... Although my dog is 11 months old, he is not neutered and we have no intention to neuter him until he either gains weight as per vet advice or hits 3 years old as per our breeder recommendation. However, he does get "excited" when he licks and it seems Yorkies like to lick so you can only tell him NO when he does this if its something that is annoying!

I have caught him marking two times and each time I said NO and he ran to his crate and has never done it since. It was about two months ago that I caught him doing this and its been that long since he did it last (as far as I can tell). I clean the baseboards in my house and do a scouting mission every morning and haven't seen any signs of marking. I think you HAVE to let them know the behavior is unacceptable before they will stop. If he's been allowed to do it in his previous home, or it just simply went unnoticed so corrections haven't been applied, it may take persistence but they will stop or at least reduce the behavior. I know that neutering can assist but that's usually when it has been done early and it's no guarantee. I would do some more research on that, if I were you, so that you can make an informed decision about what you think is best for your dog in that respect.

At any rate look forward to learning!

Tom

Hi Tom,

I put some info in red next to some of your comments but this info is just what works for me and my dog so may or may not be helpful.

At any rate, welcome to YT
