| 'Yotes' in the yard...9AM Broad daylight!! Good morning fellow YT'ers, Just wanted to 're-emphasize' the importance on keeping a watchful eye while our little guys are outside. Last Sat AM our daughter who was down from the Chic ago suburbs was home for a visit with her 4 yr old yorkie, Baxter. Baxter grew up at our house and lived his first two yrs here at our home in the country. It was missing Baxter so much when he moved with his Mom that inspired our kids to get us our own yorkie, Lambeau. Anyway, Baxter accompanied his Mom outside so that she could retrieve something from her car and he was happily ''sniffing' his way around the yard not 20 feet away from her. The next thing I knew, my daughter was screaming and I ran to the door to see her clutching Baxter in her arms and frantically pointing to the yard...I followed her pointing and was astonished to see a large coyote loping away!! When she got in the house she explained that while she was getting something out of her trunk she looked up to see 5 coyotes coming around the corner of the house, intently watching Baxter and moving swiftly towards him! Now this is also a very important point...Baxter has been well trained by our daughter and 'comes' on command no questions asked, and this made all the difference in this instance, because he immediately returned to her and she scooped him up while continuing to shout at the coyotes. The coyotes were so intent on Baxter that they didn't see our daughter until she started screaming/shouting, at which point they scattered in all directions. Thankfully it turned out ok, but we were stunned that this occurred in broad day light, so close to the house! Our winter here in central IL has been on of the harshest on record, with deep snow cover since December and the coyotes have had a tough go of it finding food and Bax must have looked like a pretty easy meal! Our Lambeau, who is not as well trained, never goes out off-leash because he wants to chase everything that moves and that always makes me a little sad since we have a huge yard perfect for running and playing. Now all our potty trips are hyper-vigilant and if I hear coyotes howling, back in we go! Lesson learned....never, ever, let my guard down. I love living in the country, but now have to 'threat' access always. |

| What a scary morning! I am so glad that little Baxter is such an obedient little son. So glad to hear that he is safe and all is well. Cudos to your daughter for doing such a great job training Baxter. It is a reminder to all that basic obedience is vital to keep our little ones safe. |

| Very scary! I'm glad Baxter is well trained and that everything turned out okay. Very good warning. A lot of people think coyotes are afraid of people or won't come out in daylight. I encountered a coyote in the middle of the day in my California college campus parking lot. We recently saw one dead on the side of our main road here in Virginia. Neighbors have seen them in the area too. Makes me very nervous.

| Wow, to scary, good thing pup is well trained. We have coyotes where I live, in fact 2 years ago I hit one with my car at 4AM while on my way to work, due to a TAILGATER I couldn't slam on breaks. I have always watched my babies when they were out side, they were NEVER left unattended, mostly because my last girl just put down this past Oct. was a MIGHTY HUNTER, she lived to hunt, would rather hunt then come in to eat. My new lil city boy is catching "the hunting fever", an adventure he never experienced as a city boy. He will be watched by me like a HAWK. He wants to go after the deer & rabbit, this Spring / Summer will be spent in TRAINING not to chase. Your daughter was lucky chasing a PACK. Poor Baxter must have been bewildered as to my mom snatched him up so fast. Thank god things turned out well.

| You have to be super careful with coyotes and the way they hunt. I learned this living in the mountains. What the pack will do, is send one coyote to befriend your dog, while the rest of packs waits further away. Once the coyote has gained your dogs trust it will then lure your dog by playing, in the direction of the rest of the pack, where they will then attack altogether. I caught a coyote doing this with my chow in broad daylight and she was playing away chasing around with the coyote. It was when I sent to chase it off my property, that I then seen the rest of the pack hunkered down in a ravine. They are also known to use this same hunting tactic on small children :-( |

| The coyote population has been rising in quite a few areas of the country. Here in the north east the numbers have really gone up a lot. Maybe the harsh winter will have taken a toll on the population. We have had reports of coyotes not far from where I live but as yet have not had any problem. We do have foxes but they have enough game to live off and don't bother our pets. It seems that the worst problems are in areas where the coyotes get mixed in with the human population. They don't have many natural food sources so they get into garbage and start picking off the pet population. Glad your daughter's little guy is safe. |

| wow what a story, my Lola would never have come when called. Because our yard is not fenced Lola is never off leash. I have been close to getting it fenced in, but I am starting to rethink that idea because the yard is pretty big. You said you have a large yard, is it fenced as well.

| No, our 'yard' is about 3.5 acres that we mow/maintain and it butts right up against the 17 acres of timber. State highway borders along one edge, another reason I can't trust Lambeau off-leash. Have always enjoyed watching the various critters that wander into the yard but now with the little guy, I'm a lot more careful when we are outside romping around. Fenching this place would cost a small fortune!! |

| That is very scary. We have them where we live cause the houses are all built on acre or more lots with lots of trees. We hear them at night and I have seen them outside out fenced in back yard. Amy is never outside by herself without one of us with her. After the first time of actually seeing one outside the fence I keep a look out when we are out there. If they are like some dogs they could jump the fence and I want to be sure to be able to pick her up and take her in the house. We also have a river not far from us and eagles make their homes there along with hawks. Always looking at the sky also. |

| I'm glad to hear everything turned out well for Baxter VS the coyotes. We live in avery populated suburb of Chicago and see them all the time. They have even been spotted within downtown Chicago. My husband works in Chinatown and there's a large pack that hangs around his job site. You can never be too careful!
