You have to be super careful with coyotes and the way they hunt. I learned this living in the mountains. What the pack will do, is send one coyote to befriend your dog, while the rest of packs waits further away. Once the coyote has gained your dogs trust it will then lure your dog by playing, in the direction of the rest of the pack, where they will then attack altogether. I caught a coyote doing this with my chow in broad daylight and she was playing away chasing around with the coyote. It was when I sent to chase it off my property, that I then seen the rest of the pack hunkered down in a ravine. They are also known to use this same hunting tactic on small children :-(
