| Car Rides....Traveling etc etc.... With the holidays coming up, I thought it would be a great time to ask what other people do to sooth their dogs on car rides and while they are traveling. I know some dogs like it, but mine do not. Not only do they not like the car, they also don't do well at strange places around strange people. Despite the fact that my dogs have been home several times, it's always the same thing...shaking the whole ride home....the nervous poop as soon as they get to the parents house....they won't eat their regular food because they've got nerves and an upset tummy....Diarrhea for at least 3 days after they get home... What do you do to make the holiday travels easier on your dog?? I've got benandryl...I've got Pectin....and it does seem to help a little...but it still stresses their little systems out!! |

| Have you ever tried any of the herbal remedies? I'm sure those would help. There is one for stress, a few drops on the tongue and they are calm for a few hours or so.

| Max cried in the car his first year. A booster seat solved his problem, but I know it isn't always so easy for all pups. Bring a favorite blankie, toy, and doggy bed for staying in hotels or other people's homes. The car booster seat can also double as a bed. Having familiar items/scents can help. The plugin scent thingy, I never remember the name, has a calming effect and has helped some pups with anxiety. Clothing or Thundershirts can also give a sense of security. My friend has an adult boy who has panic attacks in the car when they go anywhere. She has tried everything. I feel terrible for her.

| I know this sounds kind of weird, but I've always talked to ZoE and told her where we are going when we get ready to leave. I tell her, "we're going to Grandma's", or "we're going to see Dozer" (dog friend), or "we're just going for a ride" if we aren't going to see anyone & I'm doing stuff like drive-thru banking. I use the same words over & over to describe the same place. She definitely recognizes the names and it seems to put her at ease. I agree with Kristin. The purchase of a booster seat was great. ZoE knows it's her place in the car and she hops right up in it & waits to be belted in. If we're visiting people, I also take along a blanket & bed from home that AREN'T recently laundered, so they smell like her, along with a few of her favorite toys. I also pack the exact same food she has at home, so along with her RC kibble, I pack some cooked chicken & veg and separate it into little single serving baggies and put it on ice in a small cooler until I get to a fridge at my destination. I never feed her anything different when we are away from home, so as not to upset her tummy.

| For long car rides I give Joel Cerenia from the vets, it's the only thing that makes him not get sick but that's pretty much just when we go camping about twice a year. Other than that we just tough it out and bring lots of paper towels, I've tried almost all the remedy stuff and nothing works for him. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am taking my 3 girls for the first time on a 9-10 hour car ride to Tennessee. Pixie has a thunder shirt and I have Xanax from the vet for Pixie's anxiety. I won't use it unless she gets stressed on the way. I also have rescue remedy spray I'll spray the car with. They will all 3 be in a large soft crate in the back seat belted in. Pixie and Roxie usually just lay in the crate on short trips. I'm hoping they will do the same in the long trip. Cali gets antsy even on short trips and wants out of the crate. My daughter will be traveling with me and she us the only person this Cali will let hold for long periods of time. So hopefully if she gets restless my dd can hold her and calm her down.

| I would ask the vet for something for anxiety or possibly find a sitter that can stay at home with them. As long as I am with Callie she is fine. Although sometimes she will not poop for three days away from home unless Sammy is with us and she sees him go.

| Henri has always been good in the car and he loves his car seat, but there are times when he gets a little freaked out too. When that happens I just let him snuggle up in my hoodie/jacket, it works every time! Bringing his favorite toy works too. Maybe try something like that? Good luck!

| I've tried a few things for Billi's anxiety when on long rides and the only thing that's really helped in giving her a Pet-Ease calming chew (got it at PetSmart) and letting her sleep it out. She's too small for even the tiny Thundershirt, tho it does keep her from wiggling all over the place.

Very good tip about bringing food from home and not deviating from the usual diet.

| Kristy doesn't mind long car rides as long as we stop every few hours for a break. She has also been on several plane rides and was just as sweet and quiet as could be. Most folks just can't believe she's real cause she's so quiet I do make sure that she is the center of attention. Lots of love and I make it sound exciting; "we're going to Grandma's house!"

| The booster seat, herbal drops, scratching his heas... My first dog I owned in the 1980's (Miniature Schnauzer) loved to ride in the car. Just the uttering of the word "ride" would send him running to the door ecitedly. My little Yorkie puppy, however, was only 3+ pounds, and riding in this "moving, strange, small Room on wheels" was frightening to him. I think his early rides were all to the vet's office, so I think he equated car rides worth getting shots, etc. Many of his early rides would result in him getting "car sick"..so I let him have drinks of water, but would hold off on morning meals if we had to goin the car..this helped. Also, I tried taking him to places he would enjoy, to the park and other places where he could walk about. But the only thing that would calm his whining and shaking in the early minutes of our ride was if I kept my right hand on his head & scratched him while he was in his car seat. I tried herbal "calming drops" from the pet store which helped a little bit, but didn't make him really relax & "like" riding. For the first 8 minutes of any rides, he would whine in his car seat , often he would get tired, get calmer and would sometimes curl-up in his seat on his blanket and try to rest. As he has gotten older, he has gotten better. Also, he calms down faster when we get into the car to "go home", he seems by that time to be relaxed by the time I tell him we are going "home". I don't have to try to reassure him on the trip back home. If I try to take Taffy in my car without putting the dog-car seat in the passenger's seat, he gets upset if I try to have him just lie on his blanket on the passenger's seat; he wants to come over and sit in my lap. This I found out was because my Husband would let Taff ride on His lap when he drove in his truck into the field or on short trips to the village 12 minutes south of us! So, of course, then Taff wanted to come over and ride in my lap, which I felt wasn't safe as I drove into the city with him, and we would stop for walks in the park. He finally has realized at age 3, that Mom & Dad just don't do things the same way in these moving "rooms". He has gotten better with having his own small raised dog-car seat and with getting older. The first five minutes are still when he seems nervous, but once he gets to get in and out of the car and "checks out new grassy areas", he gets much more receptive of the whole idea of "going riding"!! Especially, if I sound excited & mention the "park". |

| Today is the big day....that is for the car ride home. I already fed the boys a good meal and I am going to head to the pet store to pick up some food. While I am there, I am going to look for some kind of calming agent to try., Even though it' s chilly out,I think I am also going to try to take them for a little walk.
