I don't think the pet store is any worse than a dog park or a vets or even a groomers. Anywhere other dogs poop or pee and there's a chance they aren't vaccinated or sick is virtually going to have the same risks. Heck, my neighborhood, I am sure is risky. When we take walks, the boys sniff out every pile of poo that owners don't clean up...and I am sure we walk past lots of dogs that aren't vaccinated. Heck...I am betting the dogs next door aren't vaccinated with the way the owners care for them.

To the owners that won't take their dogs into the pet stores...would it make a difference if the stores made sure the dogs that entered were vaccinated?? For the life of me, I don't understand why they don't do that. How hard would it be to check a set of vaccination papers...Hell, rabies alone?? If someone gets bit by a dog in a pet store that doesn't have a rabies vacc...I'd hate to see the outcome of that one.
One of the pet expos I went to had a paper you had to sign saying your dog was non violent and had all vaccines and that you had to pick up there potty accidents. Maybe that would be something neat and if you come a lot maybe they could have some kinda of tag you can hook to the leash that shows you signed the paper.

Yes, pet stores can be dirty. But if I were to hazards guess, I believe the floors there would be significantly cleaner than going on a walk down your neighborhood side walk, the local dog park or even across your back yard lawn. At least those floors are cleaned with bactericidal solutions daily.

Personally, I think "people" stores are a lot more gross.

Many a pet has gotten parvo and other illnesses from a pet store Taylor. I do socialize my pets with other pets that I know well. My family all have dogs and my two love getting together with them. Our son has another beautiful boxer now and Angel is great with mine but even with Angel I made sure of her tendencies toward other small dogs before I allowed mine down around her. I take mine to the pet store all the time I just do not allow them down on the floor. Many a time walking through the store larger dogs have charged loose around the corner toward us. If mine had been on the floor and if by chance they had been aggressive dogs I would never of had the time to get mine out of harms way. Mine also have a full acre fenced in yard that they run and play in several times a day so they are by no means locked up in a house all the time.

Pets have also gotten Parvo and other illnesses from going to the vet, groomer and on a walk.

Yep and most of the dogs that get parvo are unvaccinated puppies or dogs with weak immune systems.

I don't know why everything has to turn into an arguement all the same stuff they can get at a pets store they can get on a walk and maybe even worse yet millions of people still no it with no ill effects everyday!

Animal Smiley 049 Pet Store Visit Problems--germy floors?

Yes, I enjoy taking Taffy into the small family-owned pet shop. I know there is not much room for large dogs, but smaller pets often come inside. The clerks immediately help if there are any accidents. Now, Pet Smart is so large that if the owners don't tell the clerks that their dog peed, then it may go unnoticed. I saw one boxer lift his leg and pee on a bag of dog food on a corner shelf! The owner was not paying any attention, chatting to a friend, so I let a clerk know, and they called for somebody to go to the aisle with a mop. I don't know what they did with the wet dog food bag!
The trouble is as time goes on more and more pee scents end up all over these bigger stores, and it draws more dogs to want to leave their own marks. I usually let Taffy ride in the cart there because I feel it is cleaner for him up higher and there are Big dogs walking around on leashes quite often. I sure hope there is a lot of floor washing going on in the big stores--Yuck!!

This is a VERY good point. I can't tell you how many times I've had encounters with irresponsible pet owners in a pet store. I've even caught a dog who slipped off it's leash as the owner chased it around. The last time I was there with the boys, someone's pit mix was at the end of it's leash pulling at us as we turned the corner...and the owner ignored his dog and kept on talking to the store employee as it was lunging towards us.

It's probably much safer to have your dogs up in a shopping cart simply because of the ignorant owners who let their pets run wild.

I am by no means trying to argue with you Taylor you know I care about you. I take mine to the pet store also. I just worry about any smaller dog put on the floor with lots of bigger dogs who you have no idea what their true demeanor is. As far as parvo from the vet yes it is possible but I am a fanatic there also. I never put mine down until the table is sanitized in front of me and a clean paper put on it. I am not saying you or anyone who does put theirs down are bad pet owners, like I said I just fear for the saftey of all these little ones. And although millions do it everyday I don't want mine or yours to be the one in a million that has a horrible mishap from it.

I don't agree with that.
I am much less afraid of the environment, and the animals which exist naturally in it which my Dogs are inoculated against, than I am of some store, where anyone can throw a rope around a Dog's neck, drag um in, and bring not only the Dogs problems in, but theirs too (nosocomials).

I have a reasonably good idea what's in the environment, and NO idea what I'll run into in a store like that.

But I wonder...
Are you against the numerous other Breeds which Hunt (Coonhounds for instance) or is it just the Yorkshire ?

Sorry if I came of short its been a long week and still going. I really do watch her very closely when I take her and she stands right next to me also because of my anxiety I only go to stores when everyone else is at work and school so we rarely see other dogs but she loves when I hold her up to look at the guinea pigs and hamsters. I don't take her to the big pet stores like Petsmart and Petco that much because I prefer Petsmart but we moved about 30 minutes from the nearest Petsmart so if I am around there I am normally with out her. When she goes to my therapist with me though we do go into the two local pet stores that I never see any dogs in.

Lowe's & Petsmart are the only stores where I take Milo. He LOVES going there & always gets very excited when he does. I usually hold him or have him in the basket when we're in the store & I always make sure that I let him potty outside first so I haven't really had a problem nor have I ever seen anyone else that has.

I'm sorry to say though that some of my neighbors who walk their dogs seem to never give a thought about cleaning up after their dogs. It makes me so angry b/c I ALWAYS take a bag with me & clean up whatever Milo does. Without confronting them directly, I even made a point of discussing the issue with a couple of the women who do it & let them know how I felt about it. They never admitted their guilt even though I have seen it happen on more than one occasion. One of them even went so far as to lie about it---saying she always cleaned it up on her way back so that she wouldn't have to smell it while she walked!

I never bag, but...

When we go out, I'm on open public land almost immediately. Fields, along the Bayou, where really aren't any Trails, and I see many contributions from the indigenous. Droppings are actually quite helpful to my guys, locating the general area of Prey activity.
