| Hi everyone! New to YT need advice! Hi everyone, how are you? I'm new here here to yorkie talk and would like to introduce myself! My name is Heather, I live in south east England and I'm a new yorkie owner. I've never had my own doggie before, Rosie is my first ever puppy. Me and my husband just adore her, you can see pictures of her on her blog Rosietheyorkie.com where her pictures are updated every couple of days so family and friends can watch her grow! ( rosie is in my avatar too! ) I'm so sorry but this will be a bit of a long post...lol! Just a note; she has a collar only on her for sake of the bell because she is so tiny we've almost stepped on her while walking so it let's us know she's there under our feet and we'll throw it out once she's bigger. She has a harness and a leash that we've been using around the house for practice walking when her vaccines are all done. I am really new at everything, and am learning the best I can. I bought a book on yorkies which is really helpful but I'd love advice from you guys here! I have a couple questions regarding the training, and behavior of yorkie pups, I get a bit nervous at everything! 1. Right now she is being crate trained, but not entirely. When I first got her ( she's 11 weeks old now, I've had her for 2 weeks! ) she had free roam of the house. We have her crate on one side of the spare bathroom, and puppy pad and toys in there, and a baby gate to keep her from free roaming. She sleeps in her crate like a good girl, hasn't ever made a fuss about it I didn't even need to coax her into it she really loves the crate. She also has a couple puppy beds. She will pee pee on the potty pad but poop on the floor, as soon as she hits the pad, she immediatley pees on it but refuses to poopoo on it, is this normal? Do I put her on the pad when she's pooping? I have timed her potty breaks really well and usually she goes right when I expect, sometimes I have put her on the pad while she poos if I catch her in time, but she doesn't bother with it yet learned to pee on the pad, it's strange...! Everytime she goes pee or poopoo on the pad I've always praised her, gave her snuggles and a treat. She will be an indoor potty trained puppy because I live in a top floor split level flat by the ocean and the grass I have in the front isn't fenced in. 2. Is it normal that she is feet hungry? She really goes after my husbands feet when he's walking around and it's her play time/free time after she goes potty and has earned walk of the house ( she stays right beside me now, no need for a leash around the waist! she even follows me into the bathroom when it's my turn to go lol...) Is this something she will grow out of? We got her to stop biting/nipping, she doesn't bark really only when she's very excited and wants something, it's just the feet thing...lol. 3. I plan on having her in a long coat, not show coat but longer than average. Her mum had really pretty long hair that the breeder had to cut because it got messy and matted easily from caring for the puppies and not being able to get groomed often while nursing lol I forgot to ask the breeder about grooming long hair. I know it requires a lot of upkeep but I look forward to it! When does their hair start coming in long, I've heard mixed opinions that it starts to get long at 6 months, some say after a year or two, I'm curious to know. I've been making her own dog bows as a hobby and want to know when I can start putting them to use! 4. What kind of toys do yorkies love? She has a squeaky ball, she thinks her brush is a toy, she has a few plushy toys and a squeaky stuffed puppy she likes to cuddle, but finding small enough toys is proving to be difficult! Should I invest in a kong? I hear about them but don't know what they are really or if it's good. Any extra advice or tips is really appreciated and welcome! Thanks everyone, hope you're all having a wonderful bonfire night, remember remember the 5th of november! |

| I don't see anything wrong with kongs...you can fill them with peanut butter or other yummy stuff. My little guy likes cat toys a lot, because they seem to fit him better than the dog toys, but I try to steer clear of the ones that aren't plush or that have anything he can pop off and swallow or anything inside of them that he shouldn't have. I've also found mini tennis balls. He's also got a lot of toys that are too big for him, but he manages to drag them around. He's got a toy skunk that is about twice as long as him...and he sometimes trips when he's carrying it, but nonetheless, he loves the darn thing. It's quite humorous to see a little dog carrying around a toy that's as big as him!! |

Yeah, the one problem is I'm allergic to peanuts so the peanut butter would be a no go! She's a very picky puppy and doesn't like dog treats so I give her little bits of hot dog so maybe I can shove some in a kong lol...! I saw they have an kind of EZ cheese thing, but made for dogs by kong maybe I'll give that a try. | |

| Hi and welcome! I put plain fat free Greek Yogurt in Nala's kong... she especially likes it frozen. I will fill it and pop it in the fridge for a bit.

| I would not throw out the collar I think collars should be worn all the time with an id tag just incase they get lost or slip through the door or even come out of there harness and run out of sight. When she goes poo if you can get her to the pad while she is doing it when she finishes on the pad praise her and treat her. It also might help to take her poo and leave it on the pad for a little while to show her that's where the poo goes. My Yorkie would bite at feet and almost killed my grandparents a few times so we got a squirt bottle and when she would bite at our feet when we would walk we would squirt her and say no and it only took a few times and she got it. All Yorkies are different in what they like so you just have to try different toys and see which one your prefers. Mine likes tiny toys and ones bigger then he but she loves ANY balls big or small and if she can't put them in her mouth she likes to push them with her nose.

| Lola loves stuffed toys, especially the loofa dogs (I only buy the canvas ones, she kills the others). She also loves balls and braided fleece. Yeah the hair gets pretty long around 6 months, Lola is 8 months and it's about halfway between her body and the floor. I posted pictures recently, you can kinda see how long her hair is in the freshly brushed picture. |

| Collars are just fine!!! As long as you don't attach a leash to it! lol!!!Mine wear collars for the one reason that their id tags/chip id's are attached to them! Your baby is a cutie pie and if you havent already, you will fall totally in love!!! The feet issue is just because she is a baby..just be firm and repetitive in telling her no! Give her a toy to play with every time she tries to bite feet....she will get the idea that its not ok! She is still VERY young as she should have stayed with her momma until she was 12 weeks of age, so the fact that she is peeing on her pad is excellent....the pooping will come!! Just praise her every time she pottys where she is supposed to! She will in time go potty just to get a treat! (mine do,and its quite funny!) Toys..mine (all 4) love squeaky toys!!!! I buy small toys and they LOVE loofa dogs!!!! I use Kongs for 2 purposes..A: I stick bully sticks in them so when they get small, they cant choke on the small piece left and B: I use the stuffing to keep them entertained on occasion. Cant help you on the long coat as mine have short coats, but long beards and pony tails because they wear clothes everyday!!! Good luck with your new baby!!!!

| Thank you everyone for all the great tips! I like the bully sticks idea, thanks for that Kendra and Lola! My girl is not a chicken lover, I've tried giving her chicken before she hates it. She won't even eat chicken flavor food or treats lol. She will take it like she's interested and then spit it right on the floor and look at me like I'm crazy! I have her eating a grain free hypoallergenic food that comes in 4 flavors, she likes the duck and lamb the best so far, maybe I'll try the turkey next! Your little ones are all very pretty! Thanks for the advice, callie's mommy, I will have to get her some more balls! She has one plush ball that squeaks that she goes crazy over. |
