| Dew Claw Hi all! I just noticed that my little Ziggy (5 months) still has his dew claw on his left front paw. Is this an issue? My last 2 Yorkies must have not had them, because I don't remember them. I certainly don't want to get surgery now, because of the pain he'd go through. I've read that you just need to keep them trimmed, so they don't grow into his pad on his paw. Thanks for any tips you may have!

| Barney had all of his removed when he was neutered at around 5 months. It was a bit traumatic. But he kept getting them hung in our blankets and I was afraid one would rip off. My groomer and vet both encouraged me to have them removed. Now that it's over, I'm so glad they're off. He likes to dig and is into everything. Sooner or later, one of his would probably have been torn.

| I hate dew claws really I do I have had issues with Callie's and it's not fun but after 3 days old I would say just keep it unless it causes problems. After 3 days old it is considered an amputation. They can get stuck on things so just keep an eye on it.

| My understanding is that some dewclaws are more "attached" than others. Toki has one dewclaw on her right front paw and Teddy has both of his front dewclaws. They don't cause problems although we do have to be vigilant about trimming them. Dewclaws on the rear legs tend to be more problematic and I've heard lots of stories about dogs snagging them and tearing them. If the dewclaws aren't really connected by bone and are just sticking out or hanging there, I'd definitely ask the vet to remove them the next time your pup is under for something else (neuter/dental, whatever). Toki's and Teddy's dewclaws are firmly attached by bone and I would definitely not have them removed....like I said, they don't cause any issues and removing them is a major procedure and painful. |

| My Maddie has her dew claws and is now 9 years old and never had a problem with them. My other two had theirs removed as tiny pups, but one of Faith's grew back. I wonder if that's what happened with Ziggy too. Faith has had no problems with her one that grew back and I hope that will be the same for Ziggy.

| I've had big dogs with dew claws hurt them but my little ones never had any except Tibbe. He's got a vestigial dew on his right foreleg that I didn't even know about until I had had him over a year. He was 9 mos. old and had long hair when I got him and can't say if it was there all along or what. Don't know if it was just always that tiny little thing and missed when the others were removed or if it partly regrew. I'll leave it rather than have an amputation done (have heard there is a lot of post-op pain) but we do have to trim it from time to time. Wish he didn't have it but nothing I can do now. Probably your little one will do okay with his. Lisaly's Katie has her dewclaws and is very active so it's not a given they will get them hurt and be sure to trim the nail.

| I asked the vet about Gizmos who is now 4 months old, about removing them when I had him neutered at six months, and he said Gizmos are attached just like all of his other toes, with bone, and said it would be cruel and very painful for them to be removed. So Gizmo will be keeping his, on all four feet :-) I guess it really depends on how they have grown, with bone attached or not. |

| Thank you everyone for your input! I'll find out if it's attached the the bone or not on Tuesday. Regardless, we really don't want to put him through the postoperative pain. I've heard it's similar to declawing cats. We'll just keep it trimmed and it should be okay. Thanks again!

| I asked my vet about removing them and she told me often some aren't attached and some are, in a case that they are you can't remove them. Honestly it's not a problem I just keep them trimmed |

| Gina still has her front dew claws, when she gets spayed and micro chipped, she's going to get them removed at the same time, that way 1 recovery time for everything. I just don't want to deal with them for the next 15 years, and would hate for her to get 1 snagged and get ripped off, and have to deal with unexpected pain and an emergency vet visit. Cheers Quad

| They some how missed one of Gracie's dew claws when she was a baby. I had it removed when she was spayed. No problem. Yes, they can grow around and into the pad but the main problem is when they get it caught on something like carpeting or some sort of cloth. They can't just pull it out like they would a regular nail so injuries tend to happen. It can also cause problems when they run around outside. They can catch on something and get cut which can easily get infected. It is an easy procedure to have it removed. If you are planning on having him neutered that would be the time to have it done. |
