My understanding is that some dewclaws are more "attached" than others. Toki has one dewclaw on her right front paw and Teddy has both of his front dewclaws. They don't cause problems although we do have to be vigilant about trimming them. Dewclaws on the rear legs tend to be more problematic and I've heard lots of stories about dogs snagging them and tearing them. If the dewclaws aren't really connected by bone and are just sticking out or hanging there, I'd definitely ask the vet to remove them the next time your pup is under for something else (neuter/dental, whatever). Toki's and Teddy's dewclaws are firmly attached by bone and I would definitely not have them removed....like I said, they don't cause any issues and removing them is a major procedure and painful. |
