| I'm looking for some advice here...just really nervous.I took Onyx in for his second set of puppy shots yesterday.I told the vet that in the mornings he always sounds congested in his nose. His lungs were clear. He did not fuss at all when he got his shots ( they gave him a little bone to eat while they gave him the shots) but wow did he cry and bark when they clipped his nails.Anyway today I got up and he just wasn't acting right. Was not barking for me, moving really slow, whined when I picked him up.He continue acting that way.So I called the vet and they wanted to see him.He has a slight fever, tenderness around his neck area, discharge from his nose and a slight congestion cough although his lungs are clear.Seems to be a reaction to his shots. The gave him dexamethasone and another shot (convenia) to help stop any reaction and/or infection. He will now get the dex each time before his shots.I'm just worried though because he is just sleeping, looks so unhappy and I feel horrible. He cried so bad when they gave him the shots today...ugh I cried I felt horrible.I'm just crazy with worry! He ate and drank a little earlier this morning but nothing since...feel terrible for him |

| She's sore, awww poor baby! My Dex was like that with his first set of shots, scared me when he kept yelping the first night. I told the vet after that and now they give him a pain shot when he gets his vacs. However I took him to a clinic this year and they didn't do pain shots. He was perfectly fine. He also was allergic to a vac one time, broke out in huge itchy hives, his eyes swelled shut. So he had a pain shot, a shot of benedryl and I had benedryl on hand, but this year at the clinic, they don't do that and he was fine.

I never get more than one vaccine at an office visit, no matter what kind it is. Giving steroids before a vaccine stops the immune system from reacting as it should when the vaccine is given, so it's pointless to do because no antibodies will be made, which is what fights off disease. Benedryl is okay. Pain is normal for a few days after a vaccine, especially when you touch the area, just like with people. Puppies and dogs also may have a few days of not feeling well after a vaccine. Anything more should be reported to the vet. I feel if the pup has had a bad enough reaction to a vaccine that a vet wants to give a steroid injection, it's better to look into a medical exemption from the specific vaccine that caused the bad reaction. When two are given at the same time, it's impossible to tell which one, or it could have been just the combination of two vaccines the same day, or too close together. Titering may be best at this point. JMHO. You may want to look into following Dr Dodds' protocol for vaccinations....

I hope your little guy is starting to feel better. They really should have investigated the congestion in his nose before giving shots. Even if his lungs were clear he had symptoms of a preexisting condition that needed to be addressed. | |
