Shots - now yelping So Maggie Mae went to vet for her last set of shots minus rabies. She let out a yelp when vet gave her shot. I brought her home and put her in her ex-pen to rest & keep Molly from rough housing with her. Ran my errands and when I got home a few hours later, I picked her up and she yelped again! Then while I was putting her harness on again! I was rubbing her upper neck shoulder area & she yelped again. It feels swollen in that area. Should it be that way? Should I put ice on it or call vet? |
I would call the vet. Swelling in an area other than where the shot was given could be a sign of an allergic reaction. |
I agree call he vet just to be safe. I hope she feels better soon. |
Poor baby- that's how Pnut is when he gets the Rabies shot. You can do warm compresses.. Very carefully and gentle. It will help. When she lets you, you can rub the area out. Peanut always gets a lump on the injection site. If its rabies I will have to wait a day or so untill I can touch it- he will let me do a warm compress. Once I'm able to I will rub the area. It helps get the liquid moving- Try to do a warm compress. When you can try to rub it out.. It can take a week or so for the bump to go away so dnt be alarmed. One of Pnuts lasted almost 2 weeks!! |
Did she get the shots in between her shoulders? |
U guys are so up beat on calling the vet so quick. Tucker just got his f Shot and the doctor told me that it would swell and be sore for several days! U guys like to waste your $$ or your not being pro active and asking the right questions! Stop knee jerking! |

Thanks everyone! Vet said to bring her in just in case. We're at vet now. Going to give her Benadryl & anti-inflammatory meds. Better to be safe than sorry. If she wouldn't have been yelping in pain I would've just put a warm compress & alternate with ice. She's my baby & I don't want anything to happen to her, so it's not a waste of my money. I asked breeder & she said it never happened before so it could be a fluke, but I'll tell my regular vet so he's aware for her next booster shot in 3 weeks. |
It is very scary when they yelp in pain. I was scared when Pnut did it the first time. Peanut has to get benadryl before any vacc's. You should talk to your Vet to see if that's something you should do. Hope she feels better soon!! |
Callie is always sore after getting shots and will yelp if I hit the spot so I am always very careful handling her after she gets shots as well as telling everyone else in the house to be careful. Swelling though is not good so I would call and talk to the vet about that. |
hope she feels better |

I certainly hope you never have a dog that has a reaction to a shot. |
