| My cousin bought new puppy- feel it is an accident waiting to happen My cousin and her husband bought a new puppy 3 days ago. Not a yorkie, but a pug. She is only 5 and half weeks old. Will be 6 weeks on New Years. I told her that I think that was entirely too young for the breeder to allow her to go home. I know I got my yorkie Lacey at 6 weeks, but I know now it is best to wait until closer to 12 weeks. That is not my biggest concern. My cousin has 3 very small children. A 7-year old, a 3-year old and a 22-month old. The poor puppy is very tiny. Only a pound a half. I am so scared that one of her kids will step on the puppy or fall on her and could kill her. I mentioned it to her about my concern. And she says oh, I am careful and I watch my kids. Accidents still happen, no matter how much you try to watch them. And 3 kids are a handful. Several times tonight I had to tell them watch the puppy. And I held the puppy in my lap all night out of fear that something would happen. When I get my yorkie, if my little cousins ever come to my home, Chloe will be put in another room. I don't want my yorkie around small children. I will have to have her in my lap when even adults come over. I don't want nobody stepping on her.

| falling Maybe you could remind them it is best the children sit on the floor when handling the puppy, I think falling is a big concern with the small puppies. Even adults have accidentally let the little ones fall or jump out of their lap by not holding on properly. That's my 2 cents

| I have two young children and we do just fine. My husband has had the accidents with stepping on and accidentally kicking the dogs. I hope that you don't keep your yorkie completely secluded from children, I think it is best to socialize a yorkie to prevent fear and biting. I hope your cousin teaches the children how to behave and treat a puppy, it can be a rewarding experience for puppy and kids. My children are not allowed to pick up the dogs or act crazy in the house. Hopefully she will set rules too. |

| When I get my yorkie, I am not saying I will purposely seclude it from kids. But, I very rarely have any kids over here. I don't have any kids of my own and I don't have any neices or nephews either. I am usually the one going to my little cousin's house and they very rarely come over. When I had my yorkie Lacey, she was not used to kids at all that is why she did not like them. I was 15 and my brother was 13 when we got her. So, we were not little kids, we were teenagers. I did baby-sit occasionally for my friends kids when we had her. But, the kids would always try to play with her and she got scared and she would hide behind the couch and not come out. I was once holding Lacey in my lap and I was baby-sitting my friend's little girl who was 2 at the time. She reached over to pet her and she snapped at her. Lacey very rarely snapped at adults. So, I fussed her for it. I guess she was scared that she was going to hurt her.

| pug i would not be too concerned about the age. They do need to be at least six weeks but a Pug is a very tough dog. He is small right now and the children will certainly have to be watched but there will come a time that you will have to watch the pug because they are so rambumcious (sp). They are very child friendly but play way too rough. For a picture of my pug go to the yorkie brothers and sisters forum and click on "Ceeby's big sister". It is a day or two back. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Are you sure about the weight? Pugs are larger than yorkies and my big girl at 4.1 weeks weighs almost 1 1/2 lbs...that just doesn't seem right to me. Have they taken her to the vet for a well check?

| Yes, they just took her to the vet yesterday. A very good vet. The same one we took my yorkie Lacey when she was in kidney failure. She weighed a pound and half. I believe it because she is very teeny. My cousin said she was the last one left of the litter and the breeder said she was the runt. When I got my yorkie Lacey at 6 weeks old, she only weighed a pound and half as well. It was so long ago that I barely remember her being so tiny. Lacey stayed at 3 and half pounds for the longest. Then, she got up to 4 and half pounds in her senior years and stayed at that weight until her kidneys started failing. I know I just worry for nothing. My cousin will watch the new puppy very carefully around the kids. She is basically a stay at home mom. She only works for a few hours in the evenings because she teaches gymnastics. And even then she is with her kids because her 7-year old son and 3 year old daughter are both in gymnastics. She is already in love with her new pug and she named her Sasha. This is a really good dog already. She never once had an accident in the house in the 3 days they been having her. My cousin takes her outside and she does her business there. She is already being spoiled and she cuddled with me on the couch last night like a little baby.
