| 6 week help! I just got my baby Oliver two days ago,and have many concerns about having him so early. I know that six weeks is really too young, but the person I bought from wasn't an actual breeder (she just had a boy and girl and let them have babies for the money) and didn't want them in their house any more. He sleeps a LOT! and i get worried when he looks so tired all day. Is this normal? He eats the soft food well, but doesnt drink his petmilk/warm water often. He still pees, is this normal? Is it okay to have him in a crate on my bed at night? Should I take him to go potty on the papers when he whines? I know its a lot of questions, but he my first baby and I am wanting to make sure I do everything right. Yes I took him to the vet, and he his okay health wise, and we have nutri-cal on hand. I am just looking for as much good advice as I can get. THANK YOU

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | A link to a thread about a six wk old puppy http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...poppy-home.htm This thread has tons of advice on it. Young pups will sleep lots, but should have bursts of activity. If your dog doesn't then that is not normal. How much does she weigh? And has the vet talked to you about how to a) recognize hypoglycemia and b) how to prevent it. And welcome to YT.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Also why your friend might not think she is a breeder, indeed she is, most especially because she deliberately bred her dogs. She is just not a very good one at all. Yorkie pups should be kept until 12wks old and at least 2lbs in weight. I do wish all the best for you with this pup.

| Welcome to YT! Yes 6 weeks is very early and I'm glad you are educating yourself and have a resource like YT available to you. I also recommend Yorkshire Terriers For Dummies: Tracy Barr, Peter... And Your Yorkshire Terrier's Life: Your Complete... I brought my baby home at a little over 7 weeks, and unlike you, at the time I did not realize that was a bad thing. I did not know about YT and was very ignorant about things like the predisposition towards hypoglycemia. I did have those 2 books and he survived and is now a healthy, happy 4 year old.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Welcome to YT and Congratulations on your new baby! Wow...you do have your hands full. As you have already stated, this baby should still be with its mom and littermates until at least 12 weeks. Pups that age do tend to sleep quite often. Please read the link Gemy attached to her post. There is a lot of information. That you will need to know. I'm sure that other members and breeders will join in soon to give you helpful and great advice. Please be a sponge and take it all in. This community is all about the betterment of the yorkie breed. You will be given very valuable advice and direction. I can not say it enough that you should take everything in. I wish you nothing but the best with Oliver. Looking forward to seeing pictures soon.

| What are you feeding him, how often? What milk are you giving him? If you are giving him regular cow's milk or the milk replacer you buy at the store, you are doing more harm than good. If he is eating the food well, eliminate the milk altogether because really he shouldn't have any at this point. If you are feeding soft or canned food he probably won't drink much because he is getting hydrated from the food. You should keep food and water down for him at all times or make sure he has food available every few hours and is eating that often as well. Make sure his stool is a firm consistency and not watery or runny. He should act alert and interested when awake. Gums should be pink. At that age they do sleep a lot. He should be playing a little bit for a short amount of time (about 10 minutes a session) but again the majority of his time will be sleeping. Once he gets a little older you will miss that sleeping part, lol. Make sure he is nice and warm. After he is done eating, playing or waking up you can take him to the potty pad. You can put the crate on your bed at night but make sure he has a pad and food in it as he does need to be eating often.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Gemy, your link didn't work. I'm going to try it again. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...oppy-home.html The thread was full of very useful information. Is Mardelin around? Her advice was instrumental in getting us through when Scarlett turned out to be younger than we originally thought.

| I hope you do some of the reading that has been recommended for you. Right now you have an infant to deal with. He should be with his mom but since he is not you have to do a lot of the things a mom would do, like keep him warm and let him snuggle with you, make sure he eats and potties as he should. Don't give him cows milk, just goats milk or the puppy replacement milk you can buy in pet stores. Clean water should always be available. It is fine to put him in a kennel on your bed. Pups this age have to potty frequently and have no ability to hold back their urine or poo until they are around 16 weeks old. You can work on teaching him where you would like him to potty but you can't get him too far from his potty or you will have accidents. Yorkies don't have thick coats like some breeds so they do lose body heat faster than most so keeping him warm is really important. Don't over do it, of course, but make sure he is warm enough and give him a warm blanket to snuggle in when you can't be with him. Getting him checked out by a good vet that is familiar with Yorkie issues would be a really good idea. |

| smcole, my baby is 2 months about to be 3 months on August 4. I've had him for 4 days (today). Mine as well sleeps a lot!!! But he will get up play with lots of energy for some good 15 min. then go right back to sleep right after. My second day with him he slept pretty much up all day, getting up to play only once. My problems was was that he woke pup that morning and Ate about a pinch of food (pedigree, which is crap food DON'T GET). By 4pm he got up from his nap and was weak and started gagging even threw up a little. It was the scare of my life! That entire day I had some research cause all his sleep worried me and the whole hypoglycemia incident came up. By 4pm I realizes that my babies sugar levels had probably dropped I was so scared! I rushed to vet & they told me to watch him, they weren't much help! I bought nutri-Stat and different dog food. I gave him the nutri-stat and almost immediately he got an appetite ate and his energy was back very quickly! Now my concern is that he eats one good meal a day and wants to snack (small amounts)for the rest of the day it scares me that his sugar levels might drop again... How often and how much does your puppy eat? |
