Thumbs down Poppy is home!!!

So i went to pick my poppy up. She was very alert on her way home and when we got home i put her in her bed in her play pen and shes went right to sleep. I then made up some lactol milk for her and mashed up some wet dog food (wainwrights) and she drank alittle milk and had about 3 mouth fulls of food and is now sleeping again.

Because she was sleeping i went and had a look of the bag of goodies the breeder gave to us and i started looking through her pedigree, now i know NOTHING about what a pedigree really is so never took to much notice to this before, i just knew she had one. But i wanted to see some of the names in poppys family and opened it up. When i read the top of her pedigree paper it says she was born on Saturday 3rd July... this makes her 5WEEKS OLD!!!!!!!!!

I called the breeder and he told me he has always old me she was 5weeks old but i am most certain he didnt i was thinking she was nearly 11 weeks old. He said we must have got our wires crossed and the pup will be fine and not to worry... well i am worried!! I asked my breeder so many questions before i got her and thought i'd made sure that i had all the correct info and made sure i bought the breeder first with all the millions of questions i asked him.... how could this happen?! Things are starting to make a little more sence to me, like why he gave me a seringe today and a tiny bottle and said if she does not want her milk then give her a little help with this. I thought this was strange has he told me she is already weened but thought this must be normal for tiny puppys. AND how RachelX puppy called Poppy seemed to be bigger than my Poppy both at 11 weeks old!! I thought my little girl looked a bit small. But she is the smallest out of the litter of 3 so i thought nothing of it.

I am now sat panicking wondering if she is ok every time she moves or breaths. Please help me i am in tears! I will do everything and anything to make sure she is ok. 5weeks old is sooo young!!! She has an appointment at the vets first thing monday morning. She seems a healthy little pup and the breeder is being has been on the phone 100 times to me today telling me i can call him any time day or night if i needs him. I have already asked him 100 questions and he has answered all of them. I am just so worried about her being so young. I didnt want to argue with the breeder down the phone as he seems really genuine and like he really cares about the puppy, so i dont really understand why he would let her go so young?

It a good job i bought EVERYTHING i need for my little girl to make sure she will be a healthy little pup. Please tell me i can make sure my little girl will be ok, tell me what to do with a pup this young. Ahhh i am so so worried. I have totally let myself down. I am devistated. I REALLY REALLY did try to get all the correct information and researched non stop about the yorkie breed before i picked my little girl, i thought i asked the breeder ALL the right questions and altho she wasnt KC registered i didnt want to breed her so i didnt mind.

Shes asleep in her bed right now. keeps waking up looking around and going back to sleep. She seems fine.

Alright the breeder is very involved good. What does the KC say about letting pups go so young. 5wks old. Very young even in large breed dogs we don't place until 8wks old.

How much does she weigh?

Relax we will help you. Stay tuned I'm going to the KC site now. will look up some infor for you.

Call your vet today hopefully they are open, ask to speak to the vet, explain the situation he should know what standard practice is in the UK.

Will be back shortly

Yes I know you are worried, I followed your thread with joy because you were just so excited and happy, and did do so much as a good Yorkie Mom.

Okay I've sent message out to the experienced breeders on here. Hypogylcemia also known as Low blood sugar is the first concern. They can act dizzy or lethargic, lots of regular small meals. it is good you fed her when she got home. Now expect her to sleep alot she is so very young anywhere from 18 hrs a day and up.

Do you know how much she weighs? Weigh her when she wakes. Small kitchen scale best but if you don't have make do with the bathroom scale.

Make sure she eats every 2 hours most to 3 hours, lots of water available to her. Limit her play sessions short 10-15 minutes spend lots of time cuddling and holding her when she is awake.

Keep her out of drafts, but I guess it is hot in England just like here? Also I know you have pee pads, she is way too young to go outside yet.

When you get into the vet Monday put her in that lovely carrier you bought her.

You will need to wake up during the night, move her xpen or crate into your room. You will need to feed her at least once during the night, and take her to her peepad.

Finally would the breeder take her back until she is 12wks old? Why did he let her go so young? Do you know?

Default More questions for you

Okay breath in breath out relax. How far away are you from a)your breeders and b) an emergency vet hospital.

Dont worry about that question, I have posted on my fridge the three nearest 24 hour emergency vet hospitals, just in case.

Is Poppy still sleeping?

If the breeder genuinely cared about the puppy, he wouldn't have sold her at that age. That breeder is breaking the law!I would contact the RSPCA regarding the breeder.

This is the law in England:

.
Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999
Breeders who breed four or more litters per year must be licensed by their local authority. Breeders with fewer litters must also be licensed if they are carrying out a business of breeding dogs for sale.
Licensed breeders must:
a) Not mate a bitch less than 12 months old.
b) Not whelp more than six litters from a bitch.
c) Not whelp two litters within a 12 month period from the same bitch.
d) Keep accurate records.
e) Not sell a puppy until it is at least eight weeks of age, other than to a keeper of a licensed pet shop or Scottish rearing establishment.

You seem to be doing the right things for your Poppy.
There will be members on here with a lot more experience that can help you.

Just make sure you are getting some of the milk in her - have you got that special puppy milk you can buy there - I forgot the name of it, it has been so long since I was in England, but I remember buying a pseudo mothers milk for a puppy one time.

Okay not to worry there are cabs there right? We will help you through this but your breeder is very involved, and not to worry you, but that tells me he is knowing that this small there are risks, but he is talking with you a lot which is a very good thing.

What I suggest just for future reference call up the emergency vets and tell them where you live, and if there is a closer emergency vet to you. Explain the situation small 5wk old Yorkie, your regular vet closed till Monday, just in case is there someone closer to me?

Now the Kennel Club's website seems to be down, so I've not been able to research so much as I would like (yet)

Very small pups will only eat a tsp or two at a time She has wee wee'd and drank and ate, very good.

Im sorry that your pup is so much younger than you expected. You are doing a great job with her. Im pretty sure the biggest issues with pups so young and small is hypogylcemia.. just make sure she eats on a regular basis around the clock, dont let her play to hard, (can also lead to hypo), and let her nap when she wants to. I would continue to give her the nutri cal a couple of times of day so she doesnt have a huge drop in sugar. They can go down hill so fast when they are this little.....

on a side note.. i was at the store today and as we were coming out there was a little girl by our van holding onto a puppy, of course I had to ask what kind and how old, it was the cutest little thing... well she told me it was a st. bernard pup and I was shocked because i hadnt seen one that small before, then she went on to say that he wasnt quite 5 weeks old yet the breeder sold him because the mom wasnt feeding them anymore... I was so mad, even for large breed dogs that is too early to be away from the mom.. because the little girl was younger than 10 i didnt want to scare her with all the info I wanted to tell her, so I said please take extra care of him and walked away...... then she put him in her van, didnt lock it and ran into the store....ugh.. why is it so hard for people to understand.. that puppies arent toys...

Just another thought. When you call the vet on Monday, see if he/she will come out to you. Vet used to do "house calls" when I was in England at no extra charge. This would save you taking Poppy to the vet and exposing her to others.

Awww poor little baby ~ so young. At least you are very prepared and have resources to help you at your fingertips. Fingers crossed that everything will be fine.

I'm sure you are scared cause I was scared when Lucy came home; she was soo tiny! And she was 12 weeks old.

Stay calm. You can do this.
