| As already stated here the official Yorkie standard says to 7lbs. Meaning the Yorkie should not be more than 7lbs. People who show their dogs try to aim at breeding dogs that stay within the standard but they can occasionally have pups that may be a few pounds smaller or larger. Most people who want a Yorkie tend to be looking for a smaller sized dog. It's always a good idea to check out the parents and the parents ancestry when looking for a purebred pup, especially if things like buying a dog that looks somewhat like the breed standard are important to you. A two month old 5lb Yorkie pup is probably going to be a pretty good size. My girl would be considered large by some standards and it took her aaround 15 months to reach 5lbs. There are people who breed off standard dogs and with those there is just no telling what you will end up with. There are people here on YT that have Yorkies that are over 20lbs....but that is not the norm. Usually a Yorkie is a great pet at any size. A larger Yorkie can make a good family dog. Did the parents of your pup have ears that were up or down? |

| Hey, just because he's a future member of the teapot club doesn't make him any less Yorkie! He looks like a Yorkie / Biewer to me ... I would think that a veterinarian would know that breeds can be larger / smaller than their standards. Nilla is a Biewer, but she is sort of long and broad chested. Not to mention she is over 7 pounds! They just come in all shapes and sizes!

| My guess is a Parti Yorkie. Size is quite variable. I have had pups from the same litter be 3 pounds and 9 pounds when full grown. Same parents of course

| The problem with vets is they cannot memorize and know each breed and there history. Yorkies where bigger when they where used as raters. What registry is your pup registered? If its not AKC or the Canadian kennel Club then he might be a mix but the registrys I said are reputable and unless the breeder is lying a forging papers it should be a pure breed.

| If you have a vet that looks at a pup and tells the owner that he questions the breeding of the dog because he "is too big to be a Yorkie", I get absolutely livid!!!! THAT statement casts doubt on the honesty and integrity of the breeder, and clearly defines the limited knowledge the vet has on the Yorkie breed!!!! This is soo sad, to put a new owner in question as to what their baby is...or if they got skewed in a purchase of their pet.......totally unethical on the vets position!!!! Now if you take a Yorkie in to the vet, and at 8 weeks old, he weighs 8# and has short hair, a nose like a collie pup, and blue eyes, yes, that is cause to question the breeding!!! But to make a blanket statement and plant seeds of doubt about the breeding of a Yorkie pup, based on nothing but size.....SO WRONG!!!! There are outliers and throw backs and occasionally, you will get one of these outliers! I flag my breeding pair, start indepth research, back as far as 12-15 generations, of the pedigrees to see where that could have possibly come from, and I may not ever breed those two again, since we do NOT want to deliberately breed Yorkies that exceed breed standard of 7 lbs....But I had a buyer have their vet thell them the same crap about that pup they bought was not a Yorkie, but a silkie, from the size of the dog....made me absolutely nuts and we almost went to court over this! This could be slanderous to the breeder! These "vets" that hypothesize such stupidity, based on nothing but the size of the dog, should have to .......I dont know what they should have to do, but do not hold the breeder in suspicion based on such a statement, ....question the professional integrity of the vet that obviously does not have the depth of knowledge about Yorkies, or he would KNOW Yorkies can come in a larger size!!! CLEARLY NOT what we as breeders aim for, but they do happen, and most of us do NOT cull anymore jsut because the pup does not hit the standard dead on. Let me get off this soap box, and go CALM DOWN, like someone on here told me to do last week!!! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 06-20-2013 at 09:15 AM. |

| The statement of "culling" is sad because I know that years ago Parti pups were culled before they became popular. So sad to kill something just because they weren't the standard. Thank goodness this doesn't happen today.

I have two 16 lb teapots. A couple of years ago I went to the Reliant dog show and watched the Yorkie competition. The Silkies soon followed, so I decided to watch them too. My Yorkies are larger than the Silkies that were in the ring! A well-bred Silky is what, maybe 9-10 lbs? So I just refer to mine as Yorkzillas.

| Sounds like your vet doesn't know much about yorkies. You could always do a dna test?
