| What to expect after his neuter? My little man is getting neutered right now and I am picking him up a little later, what can I expect tonight? And in the upcoming days? Also what should I look out for, and are there any do and donts? Thanks in advanced. Here is a picture of him. http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/...0001E59A4E.jpg |

| Adorable boy and great picture. For traditional neuter (not laser): Dogs will recuperate at different speeds, but your vet will tell you to keep him quiet tonight and limit activity for up to 2 weeks. No jumping or running. I carried Max on his walking route for almost 2 weeks. A lot of dogs will want to get back to full activity within 24 - 48 hours, but definitely curb the jumping. No bathing for 2 weeks or until the incision heals completely. Your vet may also tell you to feed him lightly tonight. Max always has a full meal without problem after anesthesia, but he has a cast iron stomach. Pain meds -- make sure you get some from your vet. Max needed them the first night. Cone -- to prevent licking of the incision. Best wishes for your little guy for a speedy recovery.

| Hi, When Rufus got neutered he did fine. He was a different case, 1 hour after the operation he was fully awake and barking. What the vet told me was to make sure he was kept warm. Their body temperature can drop really fast. Also he might vomit or have diarrhea (side effect of the anesthesia) , but be careful for it not to go on for too long. Don't let him lick his wound to much. Are you using a cone or a overall? Don't feed him right after he comes home, and when you feed him, give him small portions. Let him drink water but not too much at one time, also in small portions. Another member might fill in and good luck with your little man

| A cone at first, the vet said he should have that on 10-12 days which seems like torture. Are there any other ways to keep him from getting at his wound? |

| Tibbe, like my Jilly, was lethargic, sleepy and would kind of whine when moved or touched much the first night after surgery. Not so much a whine as a squeak or something every time you move them. Wouldn't eat or even drink much so I would offer food and water there where Tibbe was resting on the couch and when he didn't take water after 6 hours home, I syringed about a cc. in the side of his mouth, being careful to go slowly so he wouldn't aspirate it. He drank a bit after that on his own. I also had to put some moist food on a finger and just place it in the corner of his mouth a few times that evening after Tibbe's neuter. He ate 1/2 breakfast the next day but seemed pretty normal by dinner food-wise that next day. I gave his pain meds as prescribed, wouldn't let him lick or scratch and stayed right with him to be sure he didn't for the next couple of days. I lifted him at first onto the couch and bed but pretty soon he was coming slowly up his doggie steps slowly on his own with my hand in front of him so he would try to jump ahead or go too fast. I watched for redness or anything out of the usual such as a lump or swelling, gaping with his incision or unusual sleeping, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness - anything out of the ordinary sleepiness that he was easily aroused from. Checked his gums and vitals q 4 hours the first night home and by day 2 or 3 post-op, he seemed pretty normal but I kept him from jumping for about a week, which was probably OT! Sure hope your baby does well. It's scary as can be but in a few days they are fine.

I read here that other members bought the onesies that they sell for babies and adjusted them for the dog. Maybe that is a better idea than the cone.

Thank you all for your concern. I feel terrible he is there all alone but I knows it's for a good reason. Last edited by Rpc07; 06-04-2013 at 09:27 AM. | |

| What a cutie. I just went through this last month with Bentley. I'm sure he will do fine, but I know you are a wreck. I was. When I went to pick him up he was so hyper to see me I thought he was going to hurt himself. I had my daughter with me so she could drive home and I held him on my lap. He was groggy but appeared comfortable. When we got home we wandered around a bit, I could tell it was a matter of not being able to get comfortable. When he finally laid down, I scooped him up and put him in my bed where he normally sleeps. The only concern I had was at one point he started to shiver. I worried about sugar dropping, but he's never had sugar issues before. I gave him a dollop of Neutracal to be on the safe side. I covered him up in case he was cold. I know I get cold after anesthesia. But I quickly removed the blanket when he gave me the stink eye. lol A quick Google and I read that it is common for dogs to shiver when they are in pain and within the fist 24 hours of surgery it is common. With no other bothersome signs I figured he was doing good. Don't worry if he refuses to eat or drink when he gets home, Bentley would only take water if I dipped my finger and put it to his mouth. I held the bowl right in front of him and he refused. The vet told me this would be normal and to notify her if he was not eating by the next day. I had a restless night's sleep. I woke about every hour to pet him and check on him. He slept all night long without a peep. When we got up the next morning he ate a good breakfast and even moved one of his sister's sneakers around, so I knew he was on the road to recovery. The vet told me he should be back to his old self the next evening when I picked him up and boy she was right. He basically slept all day and by around 7pm was raring to go. 11:30 (well past his usual bedtime) he was wide awake. Keep us posted and let us know how your baby is doing. If you have any questions don't hesitate to PM me.

| I agree to get the doggy tramadol - or other pain med. Your pup may or may not need the cone. My girl didn't touch her stitches and wasn't coned at all - which was much more comfy for her. I'm not sure whether boys are more likely to pick at the area though. He'll be groggy but very very overjoyed to see you again. Don't worry, it will turn out just fine! Give him lots & lots of love and attention. |

| Forgot to add, my vet used the dermabond, so he didn't have any stitches. It was wonderful. He could actually be bathed the next day but I waited an entire week. I didn't have to cone him or anything. He would occasionally lick but nothing serious, and no worries since no stitches to pull. I was thrilled with the dermabond.

| That would be torture for a neuter! The onesie sounds much better. I work at home, so I was able to supervise my boy to make sure he didn't lick a lot. The incision usually heals enough quickly that licking shouldn't be a concern for that length of time.

| I highly recommend a onsie instead of a cone. If that is not "doable" then check out petsmart or petco..they have these blow up things that go around the neck but don't block vision. There are also soft cones but hard to find in store.

| I saw the blow up "cone" and will be purchasing one but I also like the onsie idea. |

| So my little man is home, Everything went well and the vet gave him a certificate of bravery. He did drink water and eat a small amount of food about an hour ago. I have 2 questions 1. Is it normal for the incision to be slightly red? it does not look irritated just slightly red. and 2. He has not peed since he has been home he is pad trained and every time i put him on the pad he freezes like he is scared to go. Thanks for all your concern and me and my wife are thrilled he is home and doing well. |
