| You've been given great advice. Please don't limit water. I read and re-read your 2nd post and I may be confused. Are you wanting him to potty inside the plastic crate? Normally, you don't want them to potty inside the crate. That is their den or safe place. Place the potty pad inside the play pen but not inside the crate. If I misunderstood, I'm sorry. Just wanted to make sure. Welcome to YT! |

Darlene, sorry for hijacking your thread! Let me know if I should start a new thread with this question.

| Sorry, I thought the box was just a pet carrier doubling up as a bed. I should have realised, since you're all referring to it as the crate! Please excuse me, dumb moment... |

| Congratulations on your impending new baby. You will have lots of interesting experiences awaiting you. If you want your pup to learn to go potty inside and outside then teaching him to also go on the patio may be a good idea. Placing netting does not sound good to me though. These are climbing little machines. Netting would be perfect for getting his little nails into and pulling himself up with. I would never let him loose on a balcony. Puppies sleep when they are tired. There is no way to predict when they will nap. They just go to sleep. Growing takes a lot out of a baby so expect several naps a day at first. It's not a good idea to withhold water from a young pup. Putting a potty pad in a secure frame and having it near by at all times is your best bet when he is little. The picture of the play pen set up someone posted is a good way to have your pup's bedroom. When you can't watch him he will be safe and secure with a potty near by. Gracie learned to use potty pads first and when she was 6 months old I started taking her for walks. She learned to potty outside pretty quickly and we still have potty pads for when the weather is bad or for when I am not going to be home for a few hours. |

| Welcome! I have the pen you have pictured and LOVE it. Just make sure you purchase the mesh top, if not your little one will figure a way out...they are so smart.

| Lol this is confusing it is a pet carrier/ plastic crate that would double as a bed and I would used it for car rides. The white fence looking thing is the playpen. Is that what you mean? |

We actually have 2 balconies a big one and a small one but the big one has direct sunlight hitting it and the small one gets more shade. Plus the small one is right next to where I will set up his playpen so I thought it was more convenient (the large balcony has to be accessed through my room which I currently share with someone else so I'm keeping it off limits for a while). To give you an idea these are the nets I'm considering: Safety 1st Railnet - Walmart.com Deck Shield Outdoor Safety Netting I feel like the one at walmart might be easy to tear. What is your opinion or anyone else's for that matter?

I want a playpen that he won't outgrow but since I live in my mothers house she doesn't want anything too big and most wire crates are just that.

| If you do use a playpen you don't really have to use the crate. A comfy bed might not take up as much room. Some people put the crate on the outside of the pen and just attach the door to the pen so the pup has more room. They sell some good potty pad frames that lock down the pad pretty well. Some of them are not secure so make sure you get the kind of frame that locks down over the pad and holds it tightly. Even then some pups decide to try to rip of the pad. If that is the case you will have to spend some time training your pup not to do that. That is one thing Gracie never did so I was glad of that. But she was always pretty active doing other things. I guess if your pup is always on the leash on the balcony then you can control any climbing issues. |
