I read and re-read your 2nd post and I may be confused. Are you wanting him to potty inside the plastic crate? Normally, you don't want them to potty inside the crate. That is their den or safe place. Place the potty pad inside the play pen but not inside the crate. If I misunderstood, I'm sorry. Just wanted to make sure.

Oh I defenetly won't withhold water anymore, I guess I was getting wrong advice from elsewhere. I plan to put his crate in an xpen and have a puppy pad next to the crate but also a puppy pad on my balcony. I want to teach him to potty outside all the time except at night where he can potty inside (in the potty pad inside the xpen). I tend to get mosquitos at night in my balcony so I wouldn't want either of us to get bitten.
