| Carpet and Pee Stains question My Yorkie is 9 months old. I had a tough time housetraining him but believe that I have got him trained with only occasional accidents. I still keep him in the crate if he is not on my lap or got a eye on him and keep the rest of the door is apartment shut. It is my understanding that if a dog pees on a carpet it is very important to get the odor up or they will keep peeing in the same spot. I have used Natures Miracle in the past to immediately spray areas when my dog does have a accident. Last Friday I moved to a new apartment only one year old. I know the previous occupant had a dog as behind has a lot of dog poop. Since moving in my dog has peed on the carpet twice with me watching. I told the maintenance man that when I come in the front door I smell a musky smell. Today after seeing my dog pee I got my fluorescent light out and note multiple large areas that light up(not tiny dots that sometime can be seen from carpet cleaners) I believe these to be areas where the previous dog has peed and they did not get up when they shampooed. My question is could these large spots be something else? I think that if these are pee from previous dog I will have difficulty keeping my dog from peeing in this new place. Any thoughts? |

| I suppose it could be something else but it is probably from a past tenant's dog. With an old spot like that - large in size - you can try to soak the carpet..more importantly, the padding with NM or the like. Will probably take more than one attempt. Then, perhaps shampoo it all with a machine and NM in the solution. If that doesn't work - and it may not - the only real answer is to replace the carpet and padding. I understand this is your landlord's job so hopefully you can convince him. Shoot! Show him the black light thing. From my past experience with landlords, though..that's going to be a tough sell. You might have to eat the cost and do it yourself if it means that much to you. Sorry - I know that's not the answer you probably want to hear

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Only certain things show up under black lights, and pee/bodily fluids is definitely one of them. I strongly suspect you're seeing big pee spots. The concern is that, if the pee soaked thru all the way to the pad and under, the smell will still be there. You can soak the heck out of it, and it may help...but getting it out of the pad is tough, not to mention it's tough for the pad to try fully when you soak it w/ anything (pee or otherwise). The landlord may have to take up the carpet and pad, put down a layer of Kilz, and then re-carpet.

| I showed the Ground keeper some of the spots in hallway as it was only place it was dark enough for him to see. He would not admit that it was old pee but did ask the carpet cleaner to come back and go over the place again. He asked me if I could move some of my stuff around where the spots were. I moved everything except TV, couch, dinning room table, bed and dresser either outside to patio or kitchen/bathroom floor. (also kitchen/bathroom floors light up all over I guess from some ammonia in the floor cleaner they used) Anyway the the carpet cleaner got here late in afternoon and said that he didn't think he had enough cleaner to do it and would have to come back. After he found out that I had taken everything out he took a metal pole which I guess detects pee stains and put it down a few places and stated that there wasn't that many spots and he would go ahead and treat it and shampoo again. (Seemed a little ticked about having to come back) I told the manager when he went out that I felt that he could be missing some spots with his tool. Anyway I went to a flee market and a second hand store to try to kill time while the carpet dried with a couple of fans left on them. Last night after it got dark I went around with my black light and the place is still covered with places on the carpets that light up. Don't think that it even did anything. I am worried that after all my housetraining of my Yorkie is going to regress if I don't get them to get the smell out of the carpets. The management is only here during daylight hours so hard to show them what I am seeing at night. This morning I experimented with my digital camera on a tripod with the flash disabled on about a 2 sec exposure and turning on the black light and think that I have some pics to show management on Monday. I am hoping that will be enough to get them to make it right after all I paid them $350 for the privilege of having my dog in the apt. and I'm sure the previous resident did all so. That fee is none refundable so seems to me I should be able to expect a carpet free of previous dog pee. I crate my yorkie when I am not at home and take him out to pee. I watch him carefully and once in awhile when he messes up I immediately soak it up and put Nature's Miracle on it. I do not want to move as my current apt. is fairly new (1 year old) and I have a garage for my tools and motorcycle and trailer but done want to have to smell pee either. |
