| ![]() Wow!! Definitely find another vet. I've heard some pretty stupid/arrogant things from some vets but this one beats them all. Size does not equal reproductive ability. Regardless of how big or how tiny the dog is does not matter. Where there is a will there is a way and you can bet those other boys are going to try. What is even worse is that a larger dog could seriously hurt her or kill her just trying to mate with her, they don't care how little she is. Does he think that a male dog would think to itself "she's too little to mate so I won't even try." ![]() As for the brother that doesn't want to neuter his dogs, this is so stupid. Male humans are way too attached to their testicles. ![]() I'm glad your friend has you by her side, you probably just saved that little girl's life!!

| ![]() Either the vet is inexperienced in small dogs or he had (or saw) a bad experience with a small dog being spayed and his easy way out is to say not to have her spayed. Very sad and if the receptionist is giving you names of other vets and telling you that this vet has a history of turning little ones away, well then, take her advice (I saw that you were able to get your friend to go to your vet - thankfully!) and run as far and as fast as you can from him. What a moron. I think he needs to go back to school. And about her brother's male dogs, I agree with the others, they should be neutered and not just for the reasons the others posted, but also males can get some cancers if they are not neutered. SMH at some people's logic!

| ![]() Roxy never went into heat- I have her spayed after the age of 3. She bounces between 3 pounds in the summer and 4 pounds in the winter. She hates to run around outside in the cold. She was also never in contact with an unaltered male. I wanted to get all of mine spayed at the same time. Figured I would rather have the whole yorkie pack down than do it one at a time.

Yorkie Yakker | ![]() [QUOTE=LoveNeverDies;4178446]Hello everyone! Went along with my friend to the vet's office today for a check up on her 6 month old yorkie-pom. When she asked about a spaying appointment, her Vet replied "She is only 3 pounds and not going to get much bigger, she doesnt' need spayed." I was incredulous to this statement. When I asked him why she didn't need it her replied "Well what's going to be able to breed her?" Idk maybe another small yorkie? Anyway, I am VERY surprised and nervous that this vet would say that, I do not think he's a bad vet but most likely just inexperienced with small dogs. Am I the gmisinformed one here? I have always heard to do spays on even small dogs. I am sure a 3-4 pounder could get pregnant. Maybe i'm wrong. I told my friend to get a second opinion, but she said she agrees with the vet, after all he went to school. So I would just like all of your opinions, she has other small breed unaltered boys in the house and i would HATE for her to have an unexpected pregnancy.[/QUOTE...My chloe is only 3lbs.and veterinary highly recommended chloe be spay. I had intentions of spaying her anyway but was it in no hurry because I have no other dogs but he went as far as to tell me see could get out & lose or anything and that she was definitely to small to be bred so i made the appointment had had it done she is 9 mts old. |

| ![]() I say get them spayed! Gracie is 6 months old and only 2.8 lbs. I watch her like a hawk and she is never outside alone. The vet said that because of her small size, she should never breed, which I didn't plan to do anyway. What scared me the most though was knowing that if anything "accidentally" happened, no matter how unlikely, it would most likely kill her. That was all I needed to hear. She was slated on march21! |

| ![]() Thank you all so very much. My vet got her in and made an appointment for a spay. As far as the brother... I have gone round and round with him over the neutering, he even lets one of his dogs wander outside at will, a little pomeranian no less. I get the impression that he doesn't really care about his dog breeding with other dogs. Which breaks my heart, as I am sure everyone here can relate. @Midnight unicorn I have never even heard of Pyometra, how heartbreaking. This website has taught me so much just in the past few days. My Lyra is only 2 weeks old today, but you can bet that I will be well versed and prepared for her by the time she comes home. |

| ![]() It's do great that you are researching things for your baby. There is so much to learn and so many horror stories. I've gotten so over protective of Gracie I won't let anyone handle her outside if my sight...with the exception if her spay. I just live her so much I don't want to take ant chances with her! We've had bad experiences at groomers etc and now no more! I'd rather do it myself and know she is taken care of. |

| ![]() What a sad representation of a vet this person must be! You would think for the dog's own safety he would want the little dog spayed! She will go into heat. She will attract other male dogs when she does go into heat. She will have a good chance of getting a serious uterine infection as well as the possibility of cancer. Maybe this vet feels uncomfortable dong surgery on a small dog? I certainly would feel uncomfortable having him do surgery on a small dog. I would head to a more experienced vet myself. There are vets that are very experienced in doing spay/neuters on much smaller animals than your friend's dog. Vets that treat small animals like ferrets do surgery on tiny little creatures. Vets that volunteer at animal shelters do surgery on kittens and puppies of all kinds. That pup will continue to grow and could add more than a pound or more before it is fully mature. Hard to believe a vet could say such a thing! |

I had a small female Maltese that developed Pyometra during her first heat. She almost died. I had never heard of it and did not even know to watch for it. She developed a fever and thankfully I was able to get her right into the vet. I'm glad you got your friend's dog into a good vet. | |
