I've always been afraid to neuture or spay before the hormones could balance out, any intelligent answer and proof that my fears are irrational?

I do care hence me trying to be informed!

This happened with me when I rescued a young pittie mix that was living in town w no owner. I swore she was pregnant but knew that I was having a hard time finding her a home there was no way I would be able to take care of puppies and find them good homes. She was young...just a pup herself. I had her spayed ASAP so we didn't have puppies with out homes. It turned out she wasn't pregnant but...if she had been...it still would have been the right decision. Please please think about spaying this little one...she is old enough...and is definitely not old enough to be a momma. Plus if she is pregnant...you don't know what size dog bred her...not taking care of the situation could be a death sentence for one this tiny with all the unknowns!!!

If she is only 4 to 5 months old I wouldn't think she would be pregnant. Maybe just coming into her first heat, which would also cause her nipples to swell.

This was the exact issue with had with Foxy..after rescuing her, I noticed she kept gaining weight..Well we went to the vet and she was pregnant and the vet feared the puppies would be too large for her to have, so for her safety we had an emergency spay..She was in horrible shape as it was, and this too could have been her death sentence..Of course, I felt horrible about the puppies, but this poor girl had been through sooo much, and I knew nothing about birthing and helping with puppies..It was the best decision for us and Foxy...and I dont regret it one bit..

Wouldnt a good vet suggest spaying now rather then wait another week to see if she's pregnant? Especially knowing the history that she was a stray dog?

Psssssh I have a 4 pound Yorkie that is extremly dangerous!!!! He also has a set of special ninja skills and has a black belt!

Glad to hear all went well at the vets today. I took my Jack in today for his routine stuff - vaccine boosters - he's set for another 3 years now! All went well.

I would seriously consider spaying her - as the others have said, you don't know if she is pregnant, what kind of dog mated with her and that could be a real problem. You mentioned you thought ultrasound sounded expensive - in my opinion, that would be pocket change if this little one is pregnant and has a hard time delivering - you are looking at emergency C-section and then all the expenses that go along with having pups (tails docked, dew claws removed and vaccines). I would recommend that you review the breeders section here for more information.

As far as having her sprayed "before the hormones come in" she is old enough at this point - she will just retain some of her puppy like qualities (which is not a bad thing). I had my Jack neutered at five months and Izzy spayed at seven months. So far, they are wonderful and I don't even miss the hormones that could have come in

Good luck - oh and did we go with Rogue as her name?

Even after her first heat you have increased her chance of uterin cancer x2. Each heat after that increases it more. I have been in rescue for a number of years, (though I work with greyhounds) anytime we get a litter of oops pups, they are done ASAP.

So we'd pay to have puppies mutilated?
Tail docks, and dew claws removed are necessary?

I agree that the cost of a c section and vaccines would cost money though.

We went with Rogue, Ponyo, Edith... ***** she'll come to anything

If she is only 4 or 5 months old it is unlikely that she has even been in heat yet much less pregnant. Usually when they go into heat their nipples do enlarge a little. The picture looked as though they were still normal sized.

I have read that some vets are saying it is better to wait until a pup has attained full growth before spaying. Of course many have been doing the spay/neuter at much younger ages in recent years. There are arguments that go both ways. I always tried to get my females spayed before their first heat because I almost lost a small female Maltese to a uterine infection during her first heat. Gracie was too small to spay at that age so we waited until she was about a year old. You have to be able to really protect your female if you are going to go through a first heat as they do attract males from miles away. There is also the issue of uterine infections. It is not real common but something to watch for.
