| Rant .... Pet Insurance. For those of you who know me... I apologize for being M.I.A for a while, law school has been brutal. And I apologize for the rant but I know you guys will understand. So I walk home from what was arguably the worst exam of my life, only to find a letter in the mail from Pet Secure, Harley's pet insurer. Background info... they raised my premium in July AND when I moved in August. Well I open it up only to find that they have reduced my coverage from 80% to 60%. SO I got on the phone right away, they never told me when I signed up that if I claimed too much that I could get reduced coverage. And well you all know how sick Harley was last year... I took a strip off the guy on the other end, and got no result. I could totally see if this was a 15 year old dog with a debilitating disease, but this is a 3 year old yorkie with some allergies and LP and GI issues because of a genetic lottery fail. I haven't made a claim in 6 months and this is how they repay me. As many of you have probably seen in my past posts, I have been an advocate for pet insurance, it saddens me that this happened, because an insurance company is there to insure your financial security during times of difficulty. I've never seen any overly negative feedback on insurance, but has any body else gone through this? I've only heard good things on here about pet insurance. Anyways, hope everyone is well, and I promise I will try and stay in touch more once this semester is over.

| I've only used our policy once and I have all 4 insured. I use pet plan but will be reading the fine print to see if it reduces if I use it too much!! Sorry this happened to you!

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I do not have any pet insurance. I have a little savings account for them. I put a little in each month. I wasn't sure if the insurance was taking more then they were giving.

| i cancelled my insurance and just put that money aside each month. it is sorta a joke with all the fine print and they can change anything they want when they choose. sorry you had to deal with the hassle.

| ^^^ I also put money into a savings account for insurance. It's lumped in for all of us though. I do have medical insurance but not dental. So that goes into that account.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Insurance companies are in the business to make money and they will always find a way to do it. Most people will end up paying way more to the insurance company than they will get in benefits. I believe insurance is only beneficial if you can't afford some type of emergency.

| I'm sorry this happened. In the faq on their website it does say this can happen... I'm a big believer in insurance, but you almost have to read every line on their site andthe whole policy. We have come out several hundred dollars ahead by insuring one of our dogs.

| I did not realize that pet insurance worked like car insurance! It seems like they should let you know up front about their policies concerning the number of claims you make. When I tried to do research online about pet insurance I found that there were very few details about the coverage each company was offering. They put forth some info but we all know that life is not that straightforward. Insurance policies usually have a lot of clauses for various reasons but these pet companies never mention the details of their coverage. I guess that would make it easy for them to change their coverage. |

| That is a very good idea. I set aside money monthly for everything else, I can't believe I never thought to start setting aside money for vet bills. |

| I Had Trupanion for Riley's first 2-years. I got it with Zero deductible and they reimburse 80% but they don't reimburse anything for the Exam Fee though. I canceled them beginning of this year... Even though they say they don't, his premium went UP at his first year anniversary. They said it was due to Vet's pricing in my area going up. Well, his Vet is down near my parent's in Virginia little over an hour away. I now put that $43.77 a month I was paying them into his own Savings account... in addition I throw $50.00 into it each time i get paid. We had an ER visit a few months ago and the bill was $172.00. $150.00 exam fee and $22.00 for a Benadryl Shot. If I had still had Trupanion I would have got a reimbursement check for $17.60. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have all 3 of mine insured and in the past 2 years haven't use it but maybe once. I keep debating whether to cancel and save the premium money. I'm just afraid as soon as I do I will need it. Their premium goes up each year too.

Wow, even I thought insurance was better than that! I think it's wise the way you are doing it, too bad most don't have your discipline.

| It is better than that. Trupanion does not pay exam fees. I can break some of Ry's bills down in a bit.

| The first year our rate was $511. The second year it is $614. 100% payout (80% at specialists). $50 copay per illness per year. We have had him for a year and a half (511+(614x.5)=818. Paid in $818. Only considering the bladder problem (between tons of urinalyses, cultures, antibiotics, an IMS consult/ultrasound) we have paid $1575 (probably more). 1575-818=757. Then minus the 20% that they do not pay for specialty care (380x.20=76). 757-76=681. Minus the $50 per year deductible (881-100=581). We are $581 ahead because of insurance. and if we go with more testing and possible surgery we will save thousands more. It is scary to think that the premiums will keep going up, but it is even scarier when a vet looks at you and says your dog needs a $5000 procedure and ou are to pay up front. Charging it is peachy..if you are one that can take the hit, pay it off, and not be financially unstable because of it. $100 a month in an account would only cover slightly more than routine care and minor ussues.
