Default Healthy weight for a miniture yorkie?

I was just wondering what is the healthy weight for a miniture yorkie? I live in a really small place so there isn't much choice in food for her. We had her on kibbles and bits but she went up to 5lbs and got quite chubby, so we switched to pedigree and now shes down to 2lbs and hardly eats and i can feel ribs when i pick her up. Anyone know how to controll this?

If your yorkie lost 3 lbs then I think that you should take her to the vet especially if you can feel her ribs and also how old is she? If she dropped from 5 down to 2 lbs then she needs a trip to the vet

You don't have to live in a city to feed a quality diet. You can order high quality food from places like this on the net:

Are you sure she is down to 2 pounds? That is a drastic difference. I'd take her to see the vet also. There is definetly something wrong. I feed mine ProPlan for small breeds. There is a food out there specifically for Yorkies. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm pretty sure shes not sick because she still has 100% all of her energy, but theres only 2 different kinds of food here for small breeds, kibbles and bits she loves and cant get enough of, but that has to be really bad for the heart considering all the weight she gains. and the other stuff she wont touch so she gets to small. and the weight change only happens when we switch foods. When we go to the city or know someone going we get them to pick up Caesar and that she does pretty good with but we rarely do know people going there. I would probably have to take it up with my mom about ordering online because shes not to fond on that, and i'm only 16 so i dont know how to order things like that myself but if it means Little miss will be at a good weight then I'm willing to do it. Thanks

I think if your Yorkie lost 3 lbs maybe is time to change her food to a better food and have her check by a vet. I really can't say what is your pup ideal weight cause it depends on bone and structure, but if you feel her ribs she is to skinny. Good luck.

I would switch her back to what she normally eats and likes. I don't think that 5 pounds is overweight for a Yorkie. That is actually still on the small side of the 'average' scale. What would make you think she was overweight and 5 pounds is not the size she should be?

Kibbles n Bits is horrible for your dog. It's worse than if you were to eat cheetos all day every day. She likes it because there is a lot of fat and sugar in it. The main ingredient is corn, which is VERY difficult for dogs to digest, and animal by-products (all the parts no one else wants, like feet, bones, innards, skin etc.) and preservatives. It does not have anything nutritious in it. Not only is it unhealthy but I think it is dangerous to feed a tiny yorkie this type of food because all of the junk builds up in their tiny bodies. Please please switch your dog to a good food. Pick one of these: Canidae, Natural Balance Ultra Premium, Wellness, Innova, Chicken Soup, Nutro Natural. (Other members please post your favorites too, maybe something she will have luck finding.) Loki is picky and he loves his Canidae. It's not expensive to buy the good stuff since they eat so little. A 5-6 pound bag of good food is $6-$8 and for my EIGHT pound Yorkie lasts about 6 weeks. For yours it might last twice as long. Even if you have to buy it online, it's worth it because you won't have as many tummy or weight issues and it will honestly help your dog live a healthier, longer life. Please don't take this as a lecture, but I just feel that it's extremely important to feed good foods. Thank you for trying to look out for your little girl. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

I would be very concerned about that amount of weight loss. That is not normal and I would go to the vet also. There could be something underlining wrong with her.

SOMETHING HERE IS NOT ADDING UP RIGHT!!!!!!! you state that there are only two kinds of food where you are at. According to YOUR profile, your zip code is 90210....BEVERLY HILLS. By looking at some of the past pictures you've posted, you live in a fairly nice house with a nice view of the lake but you can't get a descent food for your dog?

I know something is just not right with this post. If my dog lost that much weight I would have it at an Emergency vet. It seems she has put this dog on a diet to get its weight down.

If she did put her dog on a diet to make it intentionally LOSE weight -- then that is terrible. And I don't mean to lose weight for health reasons because the dog is overweight. If her dog was healthy at 5 lbs but she intentionally denied it food so that it would lose weight, shame on her.

If I am wrong and this is not the case, then I apologize.

I would switch to the food she LOVES, so she will eat again. 5 pound is not too heavy, if 2-3 pounds lighter you are feeling and seeing her ribs. Sounds like the right size for her, which very well could be.
I would suggest a vet also.. then try to find a better quality food that she will eat, they can be very picky. ( which it sounds like she is)
the Ol' sayin " If they get hungry enough they will eat" Just isn't true, I once switched foods, and my cat lost 4 pounds and would have starved rather than eat the new food.

I'm not into giving out my real postal code/where i live on the net, and thats a bay. I live in one of the smallest communities in Newfoundland Canada, trust me theres nothing worth giving my baby here, but yes as i said before i will try online. Keep in mind here I'm sixteen, I have no idea how to order things online, and my mom is one of those people who are not into giving out real location online.
