| Do you have to shave the ears inside? Or is that just for preference? If I don't shave them is it bad for the dog? Thanks |

| You should pluck the hairs inside the ear. When the vet told me that I thought it was terrible but I watched a few YouTube videos on it and did some research on it. The hair in there ears can cause moister to say in the ears and cause ear infections.

| I shave the top 1/3 of the ear flap on the front and back. For the ear canal, I do not pluck all of the hair. Some vets and groomers favor taking all of the hair out of the canal, others do not. In threads here on YT, I believe it is 50 - 50 on reports of which way individual Yorkies do better preventing ear infections. For my guys, I favor keeping the canal reasonably free of hair and I use a flea comb with closely set teeth to keep the remaining hair clean. Combing removes loose hair.

| I trim the ear hair on my female on the outside and top 1/3 of the ear. I sometimes trim the hair on the inside of her ears with the trimmers to tidy it up. With my male however, I never have cut the hair on the inside of his ears. He has never had an ear infection or any issues... I don't know. I just don't like the idea of plucking the hair I couldn't do it!

YT 1000 Club Member | My guys react very negatively to the Plucking. For several days after that's done (by the Groomer usually) their Ears are very sensitive. They shake their heads and scratch their ears just like they had fleas (which they do no have). I've given up on Plucking, and just do regular cleanings. It's a little more trouble, but they seem SO much more comfortable.

| Plucking the ear hair is very important, as the hair blocks the air flow & it acts like a wick when wet. If your yorkie has a lot of hair coming out of the ear, it's best to only pluck the hair that is coming out of the ear canal (as those come out fairly easily & it doesn't hurt the dog) & shave all the rest of the hair (or use a blunt ended scissor bc pulling these hairs hurts them) only around the inside part of the ear. Keeping this area nice & clean will keep any ear infections @ bay. My vet told me to be very careful when using any kind of powder to help grip the hair when pulling ear hair. Some dogs come in w/a totally blocked ear canal from the powder...the groomer used too much powder &/or it got blocked over time.

| Pao doesn't have a lot of hair in the canal. I just clean his ears regularly after bath like once a week or once every two weeks depending on how dirty it is. I groom myself and I don't use powder. The area outside his ears I do trim it down a little to keep it neat and tidy. So far so good. Personally, I don't like to pluck because he is uncomfortable with it. I think cleaning with a good cleanser is much more comfortable for them. I use a all natural ear cleanser so no nasties either..forgot the brand and name right now..

Zachary's Mom Donating Member | I shave Zachary's ears inside and out. I have tried to keep the hair long but the ears just flop. I also have to shave the WHOLE ear outside or they flop. Inside, I just do what is necessary to keep them standing up. Louise |
