| How long is too long? A friend of mine has inherited a 4 yr. old Yorkie Mix, anyway....she asked me if it was too long to leave the pup 8-9 hrs a day total, while shes at work, in a large crate? Seems the pup is not completely house trained and has somewhat destructive behaviors that they are working on...I say its too long but thats just me cuz I don't crate, what do others who work and crate have to say? p.s. she leaves a pee pad at one end of the crate and water...

| I left Brandi in an expen while I was at work all day. It had all of the essentials such as potty pad, water bowl, etc. I also kept a webcam on her so I could monitor her behavior. Once she was fully potty pad trained she eventually had run of the house. As much as I hated doing it, I needed to make sure she knew the rules of the house first before I gave her more freedom. That took a year and half. It wasn't something that happened over night. Now I trust her completely at home alone. She has run of the whole house and she has not had an accident for a few months now. When she does have an accident it's usually my fault (forgetting to put down a potty pad or something stupid like that). Tell your friend to definitely setup a webcam if she does decide to go with a crate or expen. It will definitely give her peace of mind. When I watched the webcam, I was pleasantly surprise to learn that she slept most of the day. |

| I oppose crating a dog 8 - 9 hours during the day. Use an xpen or gate off a small room with a piddle pad. If the dog is being crated during the day, the dog is probably being crated at night too. 14 - 18 hours a day in crate.

| For our dogs, same as our new pup, we crate trained until they were trustable to roam free. The longest we ever left our one dog crated during the day was 7 hours because our golf game ran way to long. Other then that the longest time would be 4-5 hours when we left them during the day. Our BC was the hardest, potty training was easy but she would rip the house apart when left alone. I refused to leave them outside either in case I'd they got out and there was a wacko who was stealing dogs from people's backyard and turning them into the SPCA. Anyway, now we don't crate them at night or during the day. For our little yorkie pup we plan on the same then to gradually ween her from it if she wants. When I go to work eventually, there is Bo way that I can get home at lunch to let them out, so I will probably leave her ib our huge laundry room with her crate door open and a pee pad. Personally, I think anymore then 4-5 hours (except at night) is too long. I know I can be in one spot or hold it in for that long, so I could only imagine what doggie feels. Our old neighbours would leave their Brittny crated for 8 hours a day, then let her out in the yard for an hour or so, then crate her in the evening because they would go out. I would be able to hear the poor thing crying. They then expected her to sleep at night lol. |

| I dont like to crate for that long....xpens suit me better....then, I crate at night. When the pup goes into the crate, there is no doubt in its mind that is for sleeping....good night! When in the x-pen during the day when I am not there to supervise activities, there is room to eat, sleep, potty, play and nap on and off....and that is clear in babys mind that is what the expen is for....day nursery time!! When I am there to watch baby, baby is out and about with me! |

| Peanut will not potty in his crate, he is in a pretty large crate- probably can fit a 25-30 pound dog in there. I put his food, water and bed/ blanket in there and he has room to get up and move around.. I leave him in there from 8 in the morn till about 5 when I get home from work. He is the type of dog that likes to be in his crate, he feels safe in there. It works for us- I don’t see any problem with what your friend is doing.. I had Peanut set up like that with the Pee pad when he was a pup.. Peanut is different, he loves his crate. In the morning I will have to pull him out to go potty, he will run outside to pee and then run back in his crate. Does she leave food as well?

Donating YT Addict | we dont crate Waffles for more than 3 hours EVER while we are away. If longer than that I leave her with someone to watch her. She sleeps in her crate for bed time right next to us. Thats the longest shes in the crate and she isnt unattended were right there if she needs us.

| For some reason Guinness decided as a puppy that his crate was a porta potty and that was its ONLY purpose. We have baby gates up blocking into our TV room and a camera that we can watch online to check on him so he has plenty of roaming room. Now if we are visiting or at a hotel he has an x-pen we use. |

| I think crate training works for some, but it's not something we ever did. I tried the exercise pen, but my male would just climb out of it. Now they have their very own bedroom while we are at work and are in there until lunch time. With my two, they earned half a day out of the room while we are not there... But not the full day. If they are let out all day, they find things to get into and have accidents. I have found that this works for us, while others have different schedules. I think it's important to restrict the amount of space they have until they are potty trained. Allowing a dog to roam free that isn't potty trained... isn't going to learn to not potty in the house. I think if your friend crates her dog, maybe she could connect an exercise pen to the crate to give the pup a little more space. 9 hours is a long time to be in such a small area...

| I have never crated a dog. I did use to gate off the kitchen or a bathroom until they were trust worthy. I really think it is cruel to keep a dog in a crate for hours at a time. |

| Thank you all for the responses...I am now without an xpen! I told her to give it a try and see. She never had heard of an xpen so I'm glad she didn't take it personally and was excited at the prospect of trying it out tomorrow. She is NOT a computer person or I'd have her on here, I'm working on it! Thank you all again, I appreciate your input, all of it!
