I think it's important to restrict the amount of space they have until they are potty trained. Allowing a dog to roam free that isn't potty trained... isn't going to learn to not potty in the house. I think if your friend crates her dog, maybe she could connect an exercise pen to the crate to give the pup a little more space. 9 hours is a long time to be in such a small area...
I know 8 hours stuck in my hamster cube at work is no fun and I am even get to sneak away twice a day for 15 min's and have a computer to keep me entertained lol So I could not even began to think of how lonely 8 hours in a crate is
