I think crate training works for some, but it's not something we ever did. I tried the exercise pen, but my male would just climb out of it. Now they have their very own bedroom while we are at work and are in there until lunch time. With my two, they earned half a day out of the room while we are not there... But not the full day. If they are let out all day, they find things to get into and have accidents. I have found that this works for us, while others have different schedules.

I think it's important to restrict the amount of space they have until they are potty trained. Allowing a dog to roam free that isn't potty trained... isn't going to learn to not potty in the house. I think if your friend crates her dog, maybe she could connect an exercise pen to the crate to give the pup a little more space. 9 hours is a long time to be in such a small area...
