I use a sterilized surgical clamp for both tail-docking and another size for dew claws. I have seen Yorkies whose dew claw grew curled into the skin when not removed and buyer didn't know that. . I have also seen dew claws torn off when snagged accidentally. If an owner wants to wait and have dew claws removed by the vet when the teeth are done and the animal is altered, it can be done like claw removal on cats. I am not advocating either decision but I will continue to dock tails (I like them longer) and do dew claws myself. I have not had problem one and feel better about keeping these babies away from vets' offices at such young ages. There are too many chances for these babies to contract diseases...

| I have ran into a few breeders that do not dock tails. Out of curiosity, I asked my vet about having it done after I got the puppy ( this was the first time I was puppy hunting). She said if it is not done after three days, it is condsidered an amputation if done later. The need to be put to sleep and it is cut off and then of course there is risk of infection and all sorts of things. She said if I got one and wished to have it done, she suggested to wait til it was spayed/neutered and only be put to sleep once. I decided if I did get one that didn't have it docked, it would just stay that way. Of course, I didn't get one like that.

That i agree...a small puppy should stay home with his moma...not going out (even if it is to the vet) there is just too much risks... Mojo has his dew claws, and the breeder told me specificly that it also need to get the nail trimmed...if every breeder makes their customer's aware of it, i guess it will also help them make a decision whether they want to remove it or not. As per tail docking...is there no way to use some aneastetic (sp??) before cutting? Even tho that i do believe the healing is more painful than the docking itself...

docking Clamping and twisting is bloodless, no open wound, therefore no stitching needed...no stitches, no infection...at least that is what I find. I would not allow a vet to cut and suture either. LOL

It's a pain to cut the dewclaws! My Pom's curl into his toe, and sometimes they're so painful he won't let me touch them to clip them! My sister's dog started to pull at hers and try to rip them of!! She had them removed soon after, but since she's older, theres a lot more recovery time. I definitely recommend removing dewclaws!!!

Snoodles tail is clipped and dew claws removed. I like it like that. Don't have to worry about poopys on it. My Peke had her dew claws and they really got bad as she aged, plus if she got diarrhea, it would be alll over her tail.

My very first litter had the work done at the vet. I took MOM and babies and it was as traumatic for me as for the mom. I could not let her down and they took all her babies into the surgical area to do them and put a little suture in the tail. Mom chewed the sutures and I used one of those products you use for chewing. I removed the surures at 10 days like the vet said(I am an OLD nurse so he trusted me) and she licked a tail open again. So, I find using the clamp is as near painless as using anesthesia. Have you ever had novocaine stuck in your finger before stitches? Hurts like the devil! Gimme the stitches anytime..

I will try to get pix of my cousins yorkie (Gizmo) he has a long tail (it is sooo cute). And about docking, Mojo's tail was docked by the vet and had stitches and even aneastesia if i am not mistaken...but the vet goes every to my breeder so the puppies never leave the house (she has a little room for the vet in the kennel). As per Mojo's dew claw...i will not remove as i cut the nails every month, but i notice that when i take him to get groomed they never do, so i would recomend for somebody that doesn;t cut the nails themselves to make sure to request it at the groomers (if they didn;t have it removed)

Long tail , short tail , they are beautiful . Recently , I went to a dogshow and saw a few Yorkies with long tail . What is more funny is to look at the public reactions and listen their comments .

Lucy has her tail long and to be honest we prefer it that way, I don't like to see dogs with docked tails I like to see long tails happy and wagging. We have Lucy's hair short and a travelling doggy hair dresser comes to bath and clip her every month and she makes sure all of the claws etc are ok so no worrying about the dewclaws either! I guess as long as the dog is happy and healthy then it doesn't matter, its personal preference!
