I use a sterilized surgical clamp for both tail-docking and another size for dew claws. I have seen Yorkies whose dew claw grew curled into the skin when not removed and buyer didn't know that. . I have also seen dew claws torn off when snagged accidentally. If an owner wants to wait and have dew claws removed by the vet when the teeth are done and the animal is altered, it can be done like claw removal on cats.
I am not advocating either decision but I will continue to dock tails (I like them longer) and do dew claws myself. I have not had problem one and feel better about keeping these babies away from vets' offices at such young ages. There are too many chances for these babies to contract diseases... |
