| Giorgio is pad/crate trained. This was intentional, because I cant get up in the middle of the night to take him out. I have to get up at 4am to work. He knows how to go outside but he also knows where he is supposed to potty. I thought we would have a hard time since we moved to a bigger place, but he went right to his crate. I worry about birds of prey, and even though we have a pretty high privacy fence in the back, the backyard is huge and I just dont feel right letting him roam free dawn or dusk. If you take them out, keep them on a short leash, that way they are right by you. |

| My house is outside city limits and we're surrounded by woods. We constantly have wild life at our door step. We do not have a fenced in yard. So, out one door we have a small semicircle fenced off with the dog fencing at the bottom of the steps of our deck and out another door we have tie outs at the edge of a patio. When we let them out first we turn the light on and do a quick check for animals. On the deck we always go outside and stand with them, granted its mostly just to keep them from doing their thing on the actual deck, but it also is to keep an eye on them. When we use the tie outs they get free reign of the distance their tie outs go (maybe 12') and we just stay at the door and watch. One time BF forgot to do a check of the yard and the dogs treed a raccoon right outside the door, it was funny. We try to never let the dogs out of sight at night just because we have so much wildlife.

| We have a fenced in yard about 1/2 an acre. While I haven't seen any strange critters roaming around Georgie is never let outside alone. My husband or myself will walk out with him. I have always worried about owls, hawks ect...My poor husband opened the back door one time without going out with him....he never did that again

| YT Addict | We have a secure fenced backyard, but Rylee is only let out during daytime hours and ONLY if someone is right there with her. She never (or rarely) gets to go out at night. I'm just too nervous about the owls and coyotes......both of which we have seen in our yard quite often. She was pad trained from day one so it isn't an issue, although she prefers going outside.

| You are right, sigh. It might help if I hear it coming and it delays diving or something, but from what I've heard of their attacks, about the time you hear them, they are already on your dog! Nothing to do to prevent the hawk/owl that I know of unless you follow the dog around everywhere it goes in the yard, I think, & maybe drop the open umbrella down over him and try fighting the bird off yourself. But I do hope if any coyote or big alley cat or anything else were around, the umbrella opened up might scare them away. Thankfully I live in a pretty busy neighborhood and we're not near a lot of open land or near the edge of the city where there is lots of woodlands but that is miles and miles from here. There is a pretty large busy highway a few blocks down and I keep hoping really dangerous critters walking or flying will steer fairly clear of areas blocks from that. I just don't know what else to do. My neighbor across the alley has a little Yorkie that sometimes stays out for hours with no sign of anyone. He has a house and I think a doggie door but I'm not sure about the latter. I would be so scared to just leave my dog outside like that. He's a lot bigger than Tibbe but still, he's a small little dog.

| We have a very large back yard and have also seen hawks. We have a doggie door in the laundry room which we closed off and dh put one in the door going into the garage. That way they can use their pads, not go outside in the weather and be safe. They can also go by their self during the night if they need too. Really helps. |

| Donating YT Addict | We have a fence we bought at petco. A crate without a top or bottom basically. We placed it right under the light and we stand right there with her day or night. We have a big coyote problem here. Ive seen them leaving my front yard on many occasions.

| We always put Phoebe on a lead outside at night and stay with her. We have the owl thing going on here too! There have been several nights we see them lurking and it is scary!

| I know a lady that helps out with the cat rescue issue. She has several cats herself. She has a doggy door that goes out into a narrow enclosure that opens up into a wide covered fenced area. A carpenter could make one easily. She bought hers from a company that makes them. I know they make outdoor kennel type things for dogs but the cat enclosure has a top on it and is very secure. She bought various sections to make the design that works for her. They make a multitude of kinds. Some very fancy and some just basic. I used to have a larger sized one years ago when I raised Himalayan cats. Something like that would work great for letting your dog go outside but keeping it safe from birds and other critters. |
