| For Those Who Take Their Furbabies Outside to Potty Reading the threads about different things happening to pups has brought up many questions for me. That and all the critters that have been coming to visit us! Hawks, Owls, Coyotes, etc. are common in my area. And it is really scary. A long time ago, my parents lost their Yorkie to an Owl. I just can't even imagine. I have got to do something with my girls. Since the armadillo scare, I have decided it is a must. Things just happen too quickly. So I need your help! If you take your furbaby out to go potty in the night hours do you 1) let them go freely, 2) put a harness and leash on them, 3) make them use a puppy pad, 4) or what else???

| I wish they were pad trained, that would make it much easier at night. We don't have the choice to let the dogs go freely (live in an apt, no fenced yard, etc), but if we did, I'm still not sure I would let them. So we leash and harness them at night and I always have my cell phone with me for extra light if need be. We check out the windows before we go, just to make sure there are no foxes or deer visible.

| We have a postage stamp yard, so I make Jaeger wait at the door, then go out and peek for critters (im not worried about a coyote b/c of our privacy fence, but he's eaten toads and gotten ill before) and then let him out while I stand outside with him.

| I can't think of anything you would need to carry, plus you need both hands free to grab Mikki and Rosie in an armadillo (or other strange creature) emergency!!

| Cali was potty pad trained before I got her. She loves her little yard but does not go out unattended - if she is outside she runs into the house to potty then runs back outside . It is convenient at night and in the winter and bad weather.

| I think I could have won funniest home videos that night! But it wasn't funny for me!! I was running bare footed, in my PJ's, screaming at the top of my lungs, chasing two Yorkies and an armadillo! It was quite a sight to see.

| I never let mine go out unattended either. But I have woods behind me and beside me. We have creatures that come here all the time. I don't mind the deer and turkey but can live without some of the others!

| We live in an apartment as well so we definitely use a harness and leash. We have bats at night sometimes but the owls and hawks scare me the most...one hawk got pretty close to Toki one evening and it scared the heck out of me! We are out and back inside so quickly at night so we don't bring anything besides a doggy bag. I do wish sometimes that Toki was trained on the pad...not looking forward to frosty nights/early mornings coming up. Even the rain and wind can make potty time ridiculous during hurricane season here! |

| I take a heavy flashlight with me, for light and protection. Plus I have a peepad inside, in case I hear or think I see something strange, we'll just stay inside. Or in bad weather.

| We have hawks and owls around our place. I have heard that a leash/harness won't deter them...been several stories of them swooping even when on a leash. I worry but all I can do is be vigilant and look out (and up). At night, I listen. If I hear a owl hooting anywhere in the area, I stand over her (yes, that means following her around..I'm a sight to see) with my arms out and waving about. I'm not "at ease" with the entire situation but that girl loves being outside so...
