I am curious...besides the boxes, bottles, and bags of chemicals colored and shaped to look, smell, and taste like food, what is the "real difference" between "people food" and "dog food"...seriously? After all "dog food" came into being as a commercial, "for profit" enterprise...and has fulfilled the "for profit" part so well that there are now hundreds of thousands of pet food "products"...and there are all these recalls...and dogs getting sick and dying...and there are ingredients in those "products" which are not fit for canine or human consumption. If I could create a "garden" or "farm" where I only grew "dog food" perhaps I'd understand the difference. However, long before there was any product called a "dog"...anything...food...biscuit, etc., there was something we just called "food" and we grew it, and hunted it, and gathered it...and we people ate it and shared it with our dogs, cats, etc., to ensure their survival, and amazingly survived the ordeal. ![]() I'd be concerned if the pizza was moldy, or there was something toxic in the trash can with the pizza that might have gotten on it, or even about all the nitrates and nitrites used to preserve the meats which could build up and cause long term health issues, but otherwise, I doubt there would be much of a problem...maybe a tummy ache...maybe a pukey-wukey. ![]() Mine love pizza....they don't get it all that often, but they love it. I make it with all organic fresh ingredients including organic flour...or I get it from a source whose sources I also trust. My pizza is better for them than most 'commercial' dog food and it's minimally processed so there is actually more nutrition in it than high heat processed kibbles or cans. Additionally, with commercial kibble, even if the ingredients refer to what we think of healthy fruits and vegetables IN that kibble...and we think in terms of people nutrition mostly 'cuz most of us are not 'skilled' in canine/feline nutritional needs...we should take into consideration that THOSE fruits and vegetables 'may' be GMO, or sprayed with pesticides...watered by affluent dispersion, or from a polluted water source, or any number of other harmful things. I've had pets almost continuously since I was a kid and they have all eaten "food" we cooked for them as well as some "commercial pet food" products...and all have lived in good health until quite old. When I feed healthy foods to my cats and dogs based on what the animal would hunt/eat in its 'normal'/'wild' environment, at least I have a halfway decent idea where the food came from and how it was prepared...and...I like that!

I know just walking Thor down the street, he gets random food that sometimes I don't even see. He is so low to the ground and the streets around me are SO dirty. He's hit some jackpots at the park too. A couple years ago, someone dumped an ENTIRE chocolate cake on the ground, and he just went to town on it before I figured out why he was so interested in that particular spot. That did really freak me out, but he was fine. If I'm having pizza, I will give Thor very small pieces of crust, or I'll give him a cooked carrot, some yogurt, maybe a bean, stuff like that. I'll have him lie quietly while I eat, and then get a small piece of whatever I'm eating. I try to do a lowfat starch generally. Fortunately, he is naturally very skinny, so I am not worried about his weight, and his poops are pretty good.

| Our mini schnauzer ran into the attic while we were getting something out of there and we had placed packs of rat poison in it to get rid of the Norway rat problem we had at the time. I was devastated, but thankfully saw her pounce on the poison and eating it as fast as she could. I called the vet and he told me to immediately give her hydrogen peroxide until she vomited. I did that and I was shocked at how much poison she had ingested in so short a time! If I hadn't noticed, she would have been dead. We then rushed her to the vet for some Vitamin K pills that we had to give her for the next few days. She survived without any ill effects, but anytime she saw us come at her with a brown bottle (like a hydrogen peroxide bottle is brown), she would run the other way, as fast as she could! Our precious companion animals can be very quick to eat and dash away! They give no thought to how it might affect them. It is up to us to try to eliminate dangers or potential harm in their environment. We switched to having a pest control company take care of our rodent problem (we live in a farming community) and have since been able to repair and eliminate any rodents entering our crawl spaces or attics. Whew! I hope your puppy will be okay. I have to keep my little Kipper from eating the alpaca and goose poo when I go out to feed and water the other animals. I find it difficult to kiss his furry little face when it smells like poo! |

However, Katie, my former foster, did eat an old crumpled up breakfast sandwich foil backed wrapper that was in my car for, oh I'd say a week, when I ran into the market for literally 2 mins. She found it and devoured it. Then she threw up on my lap, in her Kisse cone within 5 mins on the way home. After that I knew not to ever trust any of the dogs with yummy trash in the vicinity. MIL drops garlic and onion on the floor all the time. She swears she doesn't I watch her (MIL) like a hawk. Esp since the dogs like to hang out in the kitchen whenever anyone's in there. I wonder why. Bc people drop stuff. Uni got a jalapeno pepper once. At least she dropped it when I told her to. It's not perfect at our house. But what I'm wondering is how these dogs are getting full pieces of pizza? I don't understand, I'm not around kids. But I have witnessed a few in my shop. By the time they drop something, if they even notice, it takes them about 5 sec to even say anything, that is IF they do. I either tell them, or the parents not to give the dogs anything, or I put them in the back. Last time Uni had pancreatitis she was sick for more than 2 weeks and was miserable. Not to mention the vet bills. I won't let it happen again. It was my fault anyway. I gave her food that set her off.

I am very careful with my yorkies but I will admit and please don't hang me lol, before the internet (Yes I am old lol) and before our yorkies we always had little poms. Our poms were between 4 and 5 lb babies but I like many was raised with bigger dogs in the old days who we fed table scraps to and they thrived on them. We fed our poms Eukanuba and they did great but they also ate lots of food we let them have from the table and they lived to be 15 and older. I would never feed my yorkies anything but their regular diets because now I know better but I do know accidents happen. A friend of mine has a little silky and we argue about its diet all the time because her kids leave everything around and he has ate everything from chinese food to a full jar of salsa with not even a loose stool. I still wonder if not for the internet and all the wonderful info we get now about caring for our little ones what we all would be letting them eat.

| You went on a long rant about commercial dog food, and asked me questions and I answered them. Not sure where the confusion is coming from.

| I think she is confused because in her post she was speaking of "All" commercial dog foods not just those two you mentioned.

| Poop at last! It FINALLY stopped raining long enough to take Kimbo out to walk at the seawall. He got excited by a long line of pelicans (17!) that were flying low over the water. After chasing after them, he stopped abruptly and pooped! I was soo happy and cheered him on. (Got lots of funny looks from people!)

| Really glad to hear that kimbo is okay ![]() Just wanted to add my two sense-Jaeger's stealth ninjaing of people food has gotten way better as he has gotten older-there have been a few times I've accidentally dropped dog friendly food (and not so dog friendly food) on the floor and not raced to yell at him not to get it, and he'll sit there looking up at me waiting for me to tell him if its okay to take it. We've really worked on 'leave it' and 'drop it' and it has helped so much. As for him accidentally getting things like half a slice of pizza-it was up on a nightstand as far away as possible and he was in the other room when I had sat it there. I was sitting right next to the pizza the entire time but I've got no peripheral vision and he is very low to the ground. In addition, I've got a processing disorder (missing my corpus callosum) so my reflexes are a bit slow, especially thought to speech in regards of reaction times.I try to be vigilant, and I try to train my dog to work with my deficits (and its helped a lot!) but in the end, whether I have 'issues' or not, accidents do happen. It doesn't make us bad pet parents. |
