My brother dropped a slice of pizza once (thank god all we eat is plain, and it was also a Ledo's, so just a little square) and same thing. Jax got to it in like .02 seconds before my bro could even tell me to get him. He is extremely fast and will swallow food!
He's got a really great "leave it" but that only helps if I'm there telling him to leave it, and physically SEE the food drop on the ground. And luckily my own siblings are very well trained not to give Jackson food and even my 4yr old sister always asks "Can Jackson have a piece of this?" before ever putting anything near his mouth, and we always have her sit up high when she's eating most of the time.
It's not like he is getting this stuff every day. I am extremely vigilant when it comes to him and being around kids in general. I don't really know how I could be any more vigilant unless I was locking him in a crate while my siblings are home which is practically all the time and that's not going to happen! So I just do the best I can. Accidents will happen. And most of the time, everything will be fine.
The time last year when he got sick was completely my fault, and I admit to being too lackadaisical with WAY too many people and children in the house. I should have been keeping a better eye on him, and assumed too much of my own family to NOT feed him! But then of course he was finding dropped things on the ground too. He doesn't ever go to a gathering that large anymore, unless he's leashed to me. But I am a far cry from a bad pet owner, and surely if I lived alone or just with a spouse, he 99.9% of the time would not get anything. It's a little more complicated living with others and having kids in and out. |
Have I ever lived with children under 5? Nope! LOL Bf's nephew's don't come over often, actually not since the 2nd one was born almost 5 yrs ago. And Uni's only 5, so she's not really around kids.
However, Katie, my former foster, did eat an old crumpled up breakfast sandwich foil backed wrapper that was in my car for, oh I'd say a week, when I ran into the market for literally 2 mins. She found it and devoured it. Then she threw up on my lap, in her Kisse cone within 5 mins on the way home. After that I knew not to ever trust any of the dogs with yummy trash in the vicinity.
MIL drops garlic and onion on the floor all the time. She swears she doesn't
I watch her (MIL) like a hawk. Esp since the dogs like to hang out in the kitchen whenever anyone's in there. I wonder why. Bc people drop stuff. Uni got a jalapeno pepper once. At least she dropped it when I told her to. It's not perfect at our house. But what I'm wondering is how these dogs are getting full pieces of pizza? I don't understand, I'm not around kids. But I have witnessed a few in my shop. By the time they drop something, if they even notice, it takes them about 5 sec to even say anything, that is IF they do. I either tell them, or the parents not to give the dogs anything, or I put them in the back. Last time Uni had pancreatitis she was sick for more than 2 weeks and was miserable. Not to mention the vet bills. I won't let it happen again. It was my fault anyway. I gave her food that set her off.
