that's great info Britster, thanks.
I have many friends and fellow dog owners who have never done the heartworm meds and they never had any problems, if I lived in the woods it may be a different tale entirely.
Even then my friends sister lives in the country and has never done it either

I found a great site that I like very much
Aromatherapy Recipes for Dogs | Essential Oils for Dogs

I actually made this up tonight because we were outside all night, I put it on me and the dogs mixed in a few tablespoons of hemp oil and I didn't get any bites, the little effers were coming at my face. Mosquitos love me so I'm glad I found a natural solution

Lillie is a VERY happy, bouncy, playful little girl...the day after she got her shot she wouldn't eat, drink, play...nothing! Usually if she hears a knock on the door she fly's to the door barking...she wouldn't even do this...VERY lethargic, just laid on the couch and looked up at me with the most pitiful look in her eyes...which were not bright and shiny.....I knew something was wrong with her...I called my vet and he told me to bring her in right away...He gave her a shot...I THINK prednosone.....he made us stay in the exam room for over 30 mins and kept coming back and checking on her,,,,she started to perk up a bit...he brought in some food to see if she would eat and she did!...He wrote in her chart...no more lyme shot...and,...didn't charge me...I don't use this vet anymore(another story for another day)...went back to my old vet...I don't even want to think what would have happened if I hadn't brought her in when I did.

We have a YT member who is in Canada whose pup contracted heartworms. It only takes ONE bite from the wrong mosquito.
I would never, EVER play with heartworms.
I have seen too many pups go through heartworm treatment...it is horribly painful for them; and it can kill them.
I totally do NOT understand anyone not protecting their pups from such a horrible thing.

I decided to pass on the Lyme vaccination after reading all the issues that have been reported with it. I don't want to take the chance that my baby would be one of the ones to have a bad reaction. A steroid would help to stop a reaction to the injection. It's a good thing you got her in there as quickly as you did.
Lyme is easily treatable if symptoms are caught in the early stages. We have no reports of Lyme disease in our area so I just couldn't bring myself to subject her to another immunization.

It's a choice I choose to make, because the insecticide over time can damage there organs and a healthy dog with a solid immune system can fight off parasites including heartworm larvae.
I don't understand why people do a lot of things either, but that's their decision to make.

Apparently the lepto thing is very very bad for Yorkies, my breeder told me to ensure it's not in the vaccines my boys get, I don't know about the lyme thing but I'm certainly going to ask, thanks for all the info folks

I am not going to argue with you....just merely say that you are incorrect and terribly misinformed about heartworms. A healthy dog will DIE if it contracts heartworms...just a matter of time and suffering. I can only pray that you will perhaps read the following link and think again about your choice to expose your pups to something so deadly.

American Heartworm Society

I have used heartworm preventatives for years. One of my pups died at 17...I had her for 15 years and she took Heartgard every month that I had her. She suffered NO ill effects from the Heartgard. None of my pups have ever had a problem with heartworm preventatives.

My vet told me if the tick has to be on the animal for a while before it would get lyme...I'm not talking days! I mean like 24 hours...

Well you live in Toronto and so do I. And I had my female dog test positive last year for heartworm! Don't kid yourself, all it takes is one only mosquitoe that is carring the disease to bite and to infect the dog. Heartworm medication is designed to kill the young heartworms. And she was a very healthy dog, but we had missed "two" monthly treatments of heartworm treatment over the summer.....

As you very well know we have one of the most "green" cities in the world; with hundreds of miles of forested/green space. Don't think that you are safe because you live in the city.
Have you looked at the stats for heartworm positive dogs here in Ontario? There has been an alarming increase in heartworm positive dogs. And BTW if your dog gets infected, and then another mosquitoe bites your dog; then that mosquitoe is infected. And you will be contributing to the problem.

Heartworm med's as far as I am aware, do NOT have any long term severe effects, that could possibly be as bad as the TREATMENT for HEARTWORM positive dog.
