Rabies Vaccine I was just wondering if anybody has had any problems with the rabies vaccine. My 2 basset hounds are exempt from getting the vaccine because they both had violent reactions. My friens's shih tzu is also exempt for the same reason. I've had dogs all of my life and I never remember having a problem. Now my little shih tzu is due for his rabie shot and I'm really afraid to give it to him. My other dogs have had no problem but I'm very nervous. |
I have four yorks....never had a problem with a vaccine thank goodness. |
While I have not experienced any issues directly related to vaccines, I must say I am absolutely terrified to have my dogs given their rabies shots. I do not understand why we seem to be having such an increase in apparent intolerance to rabies shots.....like you, I do not ever remember all these reactions to vaccines....like I do not remember in the past, all the incidences of cancers that plague so many of our precious babies. I am very fearful of vaccines, especially the rabies vaccine, and the thought that my 3# through 12# babies all get the very same dose of rabies vaccine as the Great Dane or the 140# GSD sitting in the waiting room with me, absolutely terrifies me. I believe we have reason to be fearful.... |
I have never heard of or seen a reaction to rabies vaccines and from what I understand it is not a common thing. My vet does not see them. The only issue I have seen with rabies is some hair loss at the site of injection. Now, reactions to other shots such as DHPP...and definitely Lepto I hear some of. I have pups who react to DHPP, but not anaphylactic type reactions. |
There is nothing worse then to watch your little furbabie have almost instant reaction to most everyone of these vaccinations. My Teasell isn't a tiny she is 6 lbs but she has had severe reactions to all(anifalis shock) wrong spelling I know. Even with meds on board. I am now pretty much against vaccines. I am trying to get a waiver from the rabies one and is required here in NC Just my two cents.....................Lynne |
We did titers for the distemper/parvo shot this year and my girls still carry full immunity to them after having their last booster 3 years ago. I did get them their rabie shot but I didn't want to. I will probably get a titer for the rabies next time too. |
Jackson had a awful terrible rection to lepto (and he's a bigger boy - 16lbs. Was 6lbs at the time). We give a benadryl injection before rabies vaccine just in case. He will be due this year (following every 3yrs) but probably won't ever get anything else again. |

The only reason I will give rabies every 3 years is due to MD law. I think the only way is to make a vet sign off that your dog is exempt. Unfortunately, if anything EVER were to happen though, and your dog was not UTB on rabies, it's risky. Say they bite someone... the only way to test an animal for rabies is to euthanize. So unfortunately it stinks. :( I wish I could find a way around it.... |
My cat, Puss Monsta, had a reaction to his 2nd Rabies vaccine. Just as we arrived home I noticed his little face swelling up. Back to the vet we went. I do see that the Rabies is given separately one month apart from any other vaccines or any events that may compromise their immune system (injuries, illnesses or surgeries). This is one way to minimize the risk of a reaction... |
Knock on wood Sasha has never had a reaction to vaccines. At most, she just mopes around the rest of the day since I'm sure she becomes a little sore around the area she received the shots but that's about it. |
I do titers and mine are still immune (core vaccines)...it is that rabies I have become so fearful of...dont really know why...have not ever had a bad experience with any animal I have ever owned....getting crazier in my old age, I guess! |

My vet has seen dogs go into anaphylactic shock and die from allergy to rabies. You just never know. With all the processed diets we are feeding our dogs and potentially not getting the proper nutrition to maintain a healthy immune system I don\'t find it surprising that more and more dogs are having issues with these vaccines. Remember it\'s a live vaccine and if your dogs system can\'t handle it, these awful things can happen. Touch wood for your baby and hopefully you don\'t have anything to worry about |
