How much more will a 1 year old yorkie grow?

Hi all,

I have a 1 year old yorkie who currently weighs 3 lbs. The breeder claims he is full grown and won't get any bigger. I know he will because I can feel his little ribs and hip bones. I think he is underweight at 3 lbs but just not sure how much more he will grow after a year. Anyone have any guesses? Thanks!

He will likely "fill out" a bit more and get some meat to him, but he's likely not going to get much bigger at this age. My girls didn't get much bigger after they hit the one year mark, they just filled out.

Each pup is different. My oldest boy, Bevo was only around 3 pounds (if that) at 1 year. Tiny little guy... Now, at age 3 1/2, he is 6 1/2 pounds. He did most of his growing AFTER his 1st birthday.

Mack is 1 1/2 old. He hasn't gained much weight since he was about 7 months old... Even after his neuter, he hasn't gained!!

So...in answer to your question... WHO KNOWS!!

It's really a bit difficult to say, but, at one year, I'd say he's probably achieved 60-70% of his fully Adult weight.

But beyond that...
Hearing of being able to feel his ribs (if the are clearly protruding) and hip bone as well... I agree, I think he just may need some help there.

Surely, you have had him to a Vet, but you can buy some "better" food for him to eat. Do a search within the Food Vendors, for formulas which would promote a weight gain.

However, don't be too quick to judge, just be prepared if the Vet concurs with your evaluation.

Just guesses but if his hip bones are protuding and visible to the cursory eye, and his ribs are also visible, that dog is seriously malnourished. How big he might grow is the least of your worries if he is seriously malnoursihed.

The person you need to speak to is your vet. He should be taken in for a complete, and I do mean complete wellness check, including blood work. Then you can go from there.

Feed him very small meals 3-4 times a day. A tablespoon at a time. Make sure you have water available for him 24/7 and book your vet appointment now.

Sorry I didn't mean to make him sound like he was dying. He is fine just on the skinny side. My other dog is an 8.5 lb yorkie and I can't feel her little hip bones and there is a nice cush of fat over her ribs. The little 3 lber doesn't have this. He isn't emaciated or dying or anything, I just know there should be some chub over his bones. His breeder showed me his full vet records and I have him scheduled to see the vet later this week but just thought I'd reach out and see if there was a pattern anyone noticed with growth after a year. =) Thanks for the input and the concern.

ha ya, I figured it was a "who knows" type of answer. My other yorkie was about 7 lbs at a year and now at almost 3 years she looks very healthy and fit at 8.5 lbs. She didn't grow in size/height really after a year but more 'filled out' like the other poster said.

Sometimes, dogs don't gain weight due to problems like liver shunt, have you had a vet check lately, maybe a biles acid test would be a good idea, the sooner you find out about liver shunt, the better, and many dogs can control it with diet. You should be able to feel the rib bones, you just shouldn't be able to see them, you vet can give you an idea if your dogs really needs to gain weight. If your dog is healthy and does need to gain weight, giving more treats can add weight, many dogs love sweet potatoe treats or skinless chicken breast. Joey gained a pound in a month after a tricks training class!

my ziggy is also 3lbs and hasn't really grown much since around 10 months. He is now 1 year nearly 2 months

Remy was to be 3.5 lbs according to the growth charts. But she is long legged and at 1 year she was. Too thin at 3 lbs..vey healthy but just too thin. She is now 2 1/2 and is 5 lbs which is perfect. For her bone structure.

So like the others have said.. It Depends on the pup. My guess is he will gain at least another pound.

We were told by my Maggie May's breeder that she would probably be 4 1/2 lbs. She was 2 lbs at 11 weeks when we got her. She was pretty much right on the breeders mark for the first year. After that she's put on a tiny bit of weight, she fluctuates between 5.1 - 5.4 lbs. She looks like what I've heard dogs should look like when they are at the optimum weight, the hour glass shape when you look down at them. She's a bit tall so I'm guessing that's why she's at the 5 lb mark.

My Gracie was a tiny puppy and a slow grower. Of course she was not a big eater the first several months I had her. She did grow a little bit after her first birthday but she never really put on weight until last winter when she did not get as much exercise as usual. Many dogs continue to mature after the first birthday though it is not necessarily in size. Sometimes they develop more muscle, fat or bone density.

Got Mikki at one year old. She was 3 1/2 lb. She is now almost two and is 4 lb 12 oz. So it is possible your pup will grow some.

Laddy was 3.8 lbs at 1 year old and at 3 years is now 4.8.
