Default Our Yorkie ate ant poison

Today somehow out Dex get into the bedroom, where he should never be, got past 2 boxes loaded with rocks and licked up some ant poison.
My daughter called poison control and the vet. They told her it was not much, just some little amounts like a sprinkling of salt. They said he may throw up or have stomach problems. Other than a few minutes of being tired he seems ok.

Anyone else have this?

We vacumed up what was left, don't think he got more than a lick or two. His face did show he had licked some up though.

Oh gosh I hope and pray Dex will be okay. I would keep an eye on him and if he has anymore symptoms take him to the ER. Scary how quickly they can get themselves into trouble

Never had any of mine poisoned before but I would still take him to the er vet to have him checked out. That would scare me to death. Never hurts to be safe than sorry. I try to keep everything up just like taking care of toddlers. I have one that is in to everything she can find. Please have that baby checked to be safe. Hope everything is okay. THe vet you talked to seemed to kinda blow it off it sounded like. Maybe some stomach problems???? Doesn't sound very caring.

I had a neighbor who came running to me with her little Yorkie in her arms, crying the pup had just stood on top of an ant hill that had been sprinkled with Amdro granules, and was licking up the greanules....(I have NO idea why she ran to me instead of the vet!!!)...we called poison control and told them what it was and what had happened...they were not concerned the dog was going to die or anything....just some gastric upset....just watch him for any symptoms of poisoning....I called the company that makes Amdro, listed on the bag...they asked me fore some number off the bag, and then they essentially told me there was nothing to worry about, the dog may show signs of gastric upset (vomiting, diarrhea) but he would be OK......I was very uncomfortable with the advice we were getting, so I told the lady to take the dog to the vet, because if the dog started showing signs of staggering and lethargy, it was into his system and then was was really nothing could be done by treating the symptoms....she went to the vet, they also were not concerned enough to even induce vomiting....and the little dog never missed a beat....so I dont know......scared the mess out of me and I am still not sure about how that all went down!

My sisters Maltese/chihuahua mix got into rat poison a few months ago. We aren't really sure how much she got or how long it had been...my mom just found the empty box. It may even have been nearly empty to begin with. We rushed her to the vet er and they had her throw up and then gave us some vitamins to give her for 30 days. It was quite the scare but she was perfectly fine. She has eaten pretty much everything under the sun that she isnt supposed to, including an easter basket full of chocolate, but the poison was definitely the scariest. It's good that you knew how much poison your yorkie got and noticed right away. Hope your Dex is doing great!

RAT POISON!! My Aunts dog ,german shepherd dog, ate rat poison and died!!! Rat poison causes internal bleeding....and chocolate can make them VERY sick...it mostly dark chocolate however, my Parents little girl ate 1 Hershey kiss and had to spend the day at the vets, they made her vomit and put her on IV'S...your sister is VERY lucky that her little one is ok...

We know!!! it was pretty scary. when she ate the chocolate the vet had us induce vomitting, which is dangerous, but everything went well and she was able to get all of the chocolate up. Then with the rat poison we are lucky to have an awesome university small pet clinic only 20 mins away. They were great and took amazing care with her. my sister was away at school when that happened so we were very very lucky that everything turned out ok. and the rat poison is all located in completely closed cabinets now with notes on them reminding everyone they need to stay shut!

Big difference btw ant poison and rat poison. Ant poison is supposed to cause the ants to 'dry' out while rat poison is an anticoagulant that causes them to bleed to death.

I am thinking that box of rat poison was empty...rat poison will kill a GOAT!!!! They hemorrhage to death.....
Your Yorkie can die EATING a rat that has eaten rat poison and is in the yard looking for water.....so if you are using RAT POISON on your property, you not only have to watch out for the actual poison, don let your dog find a rat that has been poisoned by your poison.

Somewhat tongue in cheek, but if you have rats or mice, buy a cat! Lol. We definitely have no problems with those critters around here.

The crazy thing is, is that this happened at my parents house and they live out on a farm where they always have at least 5 cats and have never had much of a problem with mice. Last fall it was awful though. You could hear them running between the floors. That's when my mom decided to try rat poison I guess, which I never remember her using when I lived there. I'm sure she will be way more careful next time and maybe go back to hiding mouse traps.

It is quite possible that the box was already empty as it had been hidden there for a while and the vet didn't really find any pellets when he induced vomiting. It gave my mom quite the scare though. I will make sure my mom knows that the poison can be passed from a rat or mouse to any animal who eats it. Don't know if she thought about that. Though our dogs aren't allowed to roam around outside, they are always on a leash or directly supervised since there is no fenced in yard area. They could find a mouse inside though, so that is something I should warn my mom about since my sister's dog still lives there right now. Thanks for the warning!

I know how you feel. BJ got hold of an Advil gel cap the other day. I immediately went on line. It was on Sunday so I could only get hold of a Pet Hospital. They told me to give her a teaspoon of Peroxide and make her vomit. I did, she did. I tried to calm down and found the other part of the capsule in the bedroom, one part top in hall. I am praying the liquid went on the carpet when she bit it. She played ball and wanted to eat that night. We had a family emergency and my daughter-in-law was in the hospital that night so I haven't been back on here. I want to Thank everyone for their help and concern. It has been a bad time in our family since I lost my husband end of Oct. and our beloved Yorkie Dee Dee one month later. I just pray God looks over us.
I hope your baby is OK. I am playing ball with BJ. Thanks to this website I changed her food to Blue Puppy Food and she loves it. I want her on all dry food. Now have to find the site with a Pet Detangler. I think it was Isle something. God Bless All of You and Your Fur Babies. Bev and BJ

I let mine out into my double fenced back yard, with one of us in close attendance! One day, They ran out like they always do, and were running happily all over the yard, chasing each other, then WHOA!! FOUND SOMETHING NEW RIGHT HERE!!!EVERYBODY, COME QUICK!!! 5 of them quickly circled around something they were investigating in the grass....thinking it was, at worse, a frog and didnt want them getting all that nasty foam in their mouths trying to play with that frog, I rushed over to save the frog...IT WAS A RAT!!! A RAT THAT LOOKED DRUNK AND WAS DEFINITELY VERY SICK...DYING! I put the rat in a shoe box and called animal control...told them I may have a rabid mammal of some kind, (wasnt sure if I told them it was a rat, if they would come...)they took the rat which was dead by that time....did tests on it and notified me it was NOT rabid, but dying from rat poisoning....they are the ones that told me if the Yorkies had eaten any of the rat, they would have in turn, been poisoned! and Yorkies are ratters!!! That is what God pays them to do!!!!

Poision control and the vet sadi to watch him. He never showed any signes except being a littile tired in the afternoon. So far he has been his old self.
He has been trying eat the floor boards. My wife mixed tabasco sauce with water and painted the floor board. Seems he did not like it and has left the floor alone today.
