I think you may be right about them seeing celebrities with impossibly tiny pups - but I also think they are just uneducated about the proper sizes of Yorkies. My Jack is 5 1/2 pounds and he is smaller than our cats, so to me, he is tiny. LOL

I understand completely. Louie weighs 8 pounds, and has a semi-cotton coat (it's wavy). People are always telling me he must not be a full-breed yorkie because he's too big and Yorkies always have straight hair. You can't convince some people that they are wrong. Louie is 100% Yorkie, but, honestly, I don't care if he is or not. I love him and he's adorable. I personally wouldn't want a 2 pound Yorkie. I would be afraid I'd hurt him by accident .

My little Laddy is 4.2 lbs and I get told he is big for a yorkie all the time I just say pffft and keep walking lol.

My friend saw my Sami when I first got her. She was all of 2.8 lbs and she says "She's big!". Huh?!?! She is all fur! But I guess my friend was expecting a tinier baby?? They don't realize how scary it can be to have a tiny baby.

To me a yorkie is a yorkie
no matter if he/she is 2 lbs or 20 lbs.
I know how you feel.
My oscar is only 6 lbs which to me is a very tiny dog.
I have been snubbed several times in my local pet stores by people carrying 3 pound yorkies or they make a comment about "big" oscar is for a yorkie . Then also because of his color automatically assume he is mixed with something.
I try to be as pleasant as possible and assure them he is 100% yorkie.....

Gracie is 5 pounds. She is not a "tea cup" either. When I purchased her she was expected to mature at 8 or 9 pounds but she turned out to be considerably smaller. I live in a "big dog" area so Gracie is considered to be a freak because she is so small compared to other dogs. I imagine if we lived in your area she would be considered to be a large Yorkie. I guess people just don't know much about the subject except what they are used to seeing.

I have seen a lot of ads in the NYC area for the so called "tea cup" Yorkies. I suppose that is what people want who live in small apartments although it is so sad that people breed them to be that way. Just ignore the ignorance and inform the ones who are interested in learning a thing or two about Yorkies.

Boy they would think Kayla is pudgy. She is not big, IMO, but should weigh about 5lbs. The breeder liked to have died when I told her she weighed 9lbs. But, she looks healthy. I am not afraid of her getting hurt as much as little Dudley. He is 4lbs. and soooo tiny. I watch him like a hawk because I am afraid of him getting hurt or falling etc. Just love that baby and try not to let what ignorant people say. They are not only ignorant but rude.

You know, everyone has an opinion. Every time we take Cody out someone comments on his size. The thing is, half the people think he's too big, and the other half too small.

I took him to a pet food store and the owner made a big fuss over how he's never seen a yorkie so small. I explained that under 7 lbs is breed standard. He didn't believe me.

We went to the pet expo and talked to a lady who had three yorkies. After grilling me on where we got him, she said "He's big isn't he?" I said not really.

Cody is 5 pounds 7 ounces right now at 6.5 months and will probably end up somewhere around 6 pounds (ish). Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and everyone seems more willing to share that with a small dog owner for whatever reason. But my opinion counts more, and I think he's perfect.

This thread is funny because i can't believe people in your areas think 5lbs or even 4lbs is "big". Nobody here thinks like that because 5lbs is tiny, how tiny should a yorkie be then in their eyes? 1lb?. It's sad because it just goes to show the majority of the general public has no interest in educating themselves about the breed and what the standard weight is. Not to mention their obsession just fuels the greeders to create smaller and sicker dogs.

In my opion I think 5-6 lbs is pretty darn small! Look at all the dogs out there and really people think 6lbs is big?? My parker is a little over 5lbs and I honestly wouldn't have him any other way. When I got him at 15 weeks and he was only 2lbs or so I had to constantly keep an eye on him and was so paranoid that something was going to happen to him especially because he is quite the daredevil! So don't listen to people they can really be so rude oh well plus the bigger they are the more of them to love!

Prissy weighed in at 19 oz at 8 weeks and we were very nervous around her, we were afraid of hurting her accidently, so glad that she is growing at a steady space and she is our little lover, she is laying here right beside me and I am feeling so blessed to have a healthy Yorkie. I don't care what size she gets as long as she is healthy. People really do need to be more mindful of what they say, there is no excuse for rude.

Have you asked the vet why he thinks JJ is overweight? If your vet has this opinion because he/she says to have a micro-mini, fits-in-your-wallet, smaller-than-a-half-dollar yorkie, the overweight comment is invalid. I would be changing vets though... he/she should know better than to judge a book by it's cover.

I understand comments from strangers as Kaji is in the 7-8 lb range himself. I get the "what is that?" "It can't be a yorkie, it's too big." comments all the time. FINE! You all win. He's a pitbull terrier mix pup! Happy now? All kidding aside, size SO doesn't matter. It's the love, comfort, and happiness they give us that matters.
