I get so annoyed sometimes..... Why do people always say that Bear is big? He weighs 5.8 pounds and is 9.5 inches high by 10 inches long. Is that really large for a yorkie. He is bigger than Vivi was but she was not well (Had and died from liver shunt) and was sold, sadly, as a teacup.....I was very careful this time to get a breeder and a dog that fulfilled the long YT checklist. What's up with people? I live in the metropolitan NYC area so I guess tiny is better? I disagree, as Bear is as healthy and happy as can be :) |
I think bigger is GREAT!!!!!!!! But the way they say it, is as if it is a bad thing.....I always explain the teacup thing but just come off sounding defensive:( |
I dont think it matters really. I think it is more of a personal choice, who cares what they think. It's your furbaby, not theirs. IMO:) |
Mine is 10lb at 7 months....I was ask one time if he was on steroids..lol. I agree I love bigger! |
I totally agree.....I couldn't love him more...he is my heart :) |
Try having a 16 pounder lol people are just jealous of what you have so they want to make you feel bad about it and make you feel like yours is not so great when in reality it is and your the one who is blessed with yorkie love :) |
I just always thought he is average sized....he is full grown now at almost a year and half. I mean, for goodness sake, the standard says 7lbs and under. How could he be big? I think that people see celebrities with impossibly small dogs and think that is the way they should be. |

It is crazy and I can't believe how rude people can be, I am hoping my Prissy weighs around 7 lbs when fully grown, her parents were around that size and that was what I was looking for. Now my sister bought one that should not get over 3 lbs...I have a Pekingese and I would be concerned with a 3 lb. Don't get me wrong he is cute as can be and is now 2 months younger than Prissy and is very tiny. I say to each his own and no matter what, we all love them just they way they are... |
I agree... Bear is not big for a yorkie. He is normal! I have Remy who is 5 lbs. which I think is perfect. I see people who say they have a teacup... I used to correct them but now I don't bother...I just wish them well. I guess we are just drawn to the little guys but after I learn about the risk I just wanted a healthy pup! So, dont get upset just know you are right! :) |
Six pounds just ISN"T a big Yorkie... he's just right. I have a 10 pounder that is adorable... kind, quiet, loving, with beautiful coloring. But he's more a Yorkshire "terrier"... long nose, long body, short legs, broad chest. My 6 pounder is baby faced, squash-nosed, completely square (10 x 10), and a holy terror (as opposed to 'terrier'). He's a blue collar mill ratter with a fancy pedigree. If your baby is muscular and appropriate height/weight, then let the comments slide off like rain on a windshield. My Mama taught me not to comment on people's size or unusual features -- positive or negative. |
I have someone told me she just want to have a very tiny and affordable one, even if it has 3 legs. One was comment about a Yorkie who is only 6 pounds as a wild horse. Go figure. To me size doesn't matter, health is the most important thing. I have had a big Yorkie and he is gorgeous. Now I have a puppy girl, was told she will grow into a 4 - 5 lbs girl but if she is bigger, I still love her as she is. 5.8 lbs can't be called big. I think it's a very nice healthy average size, and Gawd forbidden, I always think at least if one gets sick, at least it has some weight to loose and recover faster instead of one that weights almost next to nothing and wastes away. |
People just dont understand that Yorkies come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Ears up or ears down.... they are still Yorkies !! I have one of the biggest here on YT who has gotten to be 20lbs at her heaviest. there is a thread here somewhere that members put the size and weight of their Yorkies! I cant find it... but it proves my point. |
my jj is only 10 pounds and every time i bring him to the vet they say he is overweight. i can still feel his ribs without any fat over them and he is very active. he really doesn't eat all that much so it really annoys me when they tell me he need to be on a diet. if he ate any less he would be down to one meal a day of only about 1/4 cup of food. as it is he has 1 table spoon of homemade food in the morning and 1/4 cup of blue buffalo at night. he also takes two walks a day of about 3/4 of a mile each. hes not fat just fluffy..... |
How Big Is A Yorkie ? Smaller than Great Dane. :D Most of us have had rude or ignorant people say things about our Yorkies. Yorkies do come in many sizes and coat type. Some of us trim our dogs , and others don't. Some Yorkies are style divas and some wouldn't even wear a bow. The love they give us has nothing to do with pounds. We know size only matters if you are planning on breeding or showing a competing bench dog. Some of us prefer a little bigger size when adopting a family pet. Your dog is on the small side, so either come up with a cute reply or ignore silly comments. I think Bear is adorable ! |
