I have 5 dogs and all are shelter dogs. All are wonderful companions! Some of you might know Tiny from the rescue forum. Over the past few years I have adopted elderly shelter dogs, two yorkies in particular, that were turned in at the young ages of 13 and 15 years old. I simply could not leave knowing their final days were laying on a cement floor. One I adopted as the tech was taking her back to be euthanized. She was a loving, sweet old lady. She lived only a month passing in her sleep. She died loved and in the comfort of a warm bed. It would be an honor to have another. All of my companions are well behaved, housebroken and have been a joy. I would encourage anyone to not overlook a yorkie shelter dog. Much of my happiness today is from the love and loyalty I have received in return from them.

My mom has a rescue yorkie and he is great! Right now I am unable to have another yorkie though because Callie is still recovering from LP surgery and I could not afforded another yorkie.
get well soon Callie!!!

Many of us on YT have Dogs that come from rescues, shelters, or bad situations. I do not think everyone can or should adopt dogs that have a past. It depends on the person and the dogs needs. I think because we are suh a large country and have so many people. We have more dogs that need homes. And it also depends on the location. I live in Fl. USA and work with a shelter and rescue as a volenteer. In the Humane Society Shelter in this area we rarely have small dogs more than a few days before they are adopted. True most of the small dogs are mixed breeds, but people really don't seem to care they just want a nice pet to share their life with. The Rescue gets more small dogs. Some are older, or have a health issue the owner could not afford to treat. Some dogs come to us because the owner died, went to a nursing home, has health problems or must move to a place that they can not have a dog or dogs. Most dogs at the rescue are not surrendered because of bad behavior. We have a waiting list and there is about four times more requests for small dogs than we recieve.
To answer your question YES I would and have adopted a rescue Yorkie.

I know a lot of people transport small dogs to other states as there is a shortage in some places, its a shame they cant all be moved to areas where they are wanted....

I get emails from petfinder for Yorkies in a 500 mile radius from my location in OK. It is very sad how many Yorkies there are that need good homes. I'm not ready for my next Yorkie yet I keep going back and forth on a puppy from a reputable breeder or a rescue again. But I can't help but check Pet finder everyday.

I started off with one animal rescue group on facebook just for uk animals but i then started seeing posts about dogs in the USA in shelters so i started a worldwide group...then due to demand we end up with 34 animal rescue groups that include yorkies, terrers, shih tzu, poodles, labs, chi, pugs just to mention a few breed groups that we have, i then started groups for foster / transport and pulling volunteers as a lot of the time a dog had a home to go to but the adopter was in another state.... then i was sent posts about other animals needing rescue or homes so i started groups for cats, farm animals , small furries and horses..the list just keeps growing Even though i live in the UK i still think i should do my bit for animals in other countries so i try my best and it seems to help as we have helped save a lot of animals with our members which is over 25.000 members now
We have over 800 members on the yorkie rescue group but if anyone on here would like to join please do so, we always need more members xx

I have adopted a total of 7 Yorkies. None were shelter dog's.

I adopted them thru a Rescue group. 3 of them came from horrible puppymill's. I adopted them from Puppymill Rescue.

1 was a private out of state rescue situation.
1 was an owner turn in to a Rescue Group. (CRA)
1 was a breeder release to a rescue group. (CRA)

1 was adopted from the Vet Clinic in Korea after she was found as stray running around on the post.

I got Harley from a breeder, but am definitely not objected to getting a rescue in the future. I want one. My biggest concern is I want to make sure that I have a lot of money saved before getting a rescue. I refuse to pay the adoption fee and not have every penny possible to fully save it's life. Ok yeah I can afford a "normal dog" whatever that means, but really a rescue has a chance of needing really special care.

But that's just my opinion, if you're going to save a dog's life you might as well have enough money to fix every little thing that's broken, or it's not fair. (not to say that all rescues are that ill or broken, it would just kill me to not be able to do everything possible to make him or her happy). I know there are many amazing people on here who have done just that, and I commend them.

Cody is actually the only pet I have ever had who *didn't* come from a shelter or rescue. I've adopted one other dog, and 5 cats from shelters or rescues in my life. (1 dog and 2 cats from shelters, 3 other cats from rescues.) Right now Cody has two feline big sisters, one from a rescue and one from a shelter. So yes, I would totally adopt from a shelter. I just wanted to try a puppy this once.

I have adopted all my dogs except the Husky that we used to have. My boyfriend (now husband) bought the Husky from a breeder because he never heard of shelters or rescues. He didn't know so many Huskies were in need of a home because most people can't handle their puppy years, adult years, and the mountains of hair that they shed. She was with us for 13 years before she got brain tumors and had to be put down.

I am in the process of adopting a rescue Yorkie. She was given up to a rescue because she couldn't be used for breeding. She has luxating patellas.

She's about 4.5 lbs and very sweet and cute. My daughter's Chihuahua was found as a 3 lb stray on the streets. She was skin and bones when we met her at the animal shelter, but she has been such a great dog. She's now around 4 lbs.

There are two Yorkies in the city that I just moved from so Yorkies do become available in shelters every few months. The rescue I'm working with has another Yorkie that just came in. I haven't asked about it yet, but I will once we finish the adoption process for the one we have now. She's going to be called, Sparrow.
