Would you rescue a shelter yorkie? I have 34 animal rescue groups on facebook and one is called yorkies & small terriers worldwide needing fur-ever homes & deathrow :( There seems to be a lot of yorkies in the US that are in shelters at risk of being killed and i wondered how many of you on here have adopted a shelter yorkie? if you never have had a rescue, would you? if you wouldn't can i please ask why? :) In the UK we do get the odd yorkie turning up in our pounds but rescues go and get them and then re-home them so we dont have much of a problem with it here.... its staffordshire terriers that we are over run with in pounds and most are killed :( |
No one has a rescue / shelter yorkie????? |
We've adopted both of Our Yorkies from shelters. Our little Andy has a story behind Him, I found Him listed on petfinder.com. Then I went to the shelters site. They had a link to their FB page. When I went to their FB page, they had posted a pic of him 10 mins earlier. Then I called the shelter. I told them I could come tomarrow. They said He wouldn't be there by tomarrow. SO I said I'd be there later today. They put a travel hold on him for us. We drove 90 miles down to see him. When we walked in there were 3 people waiting there to see if we were going to take him. The looks on their dejected faces as we paid the adoption fee was terrible. THere are Peeps waiting in line at shelters around here for small breed dogs. |
I have!!! I adopted Coral , my avatar, from a Yorkie Rescue! She was a Silky Terrier. She has passed away. But I love her so much and miss her. Rescue dogs are very special. They want to be loved so much. You grow so close and bond so much as you watch them change from scared little dogs into trusting ones. I sometimes wonder if I will ever love another dog like I did Coral. |
sorry, I didn't read OP very well. I didn't get Coral from a shelter i got her from a rescue. |
Well done you for saving them  Yeah there does seem to be a shortage in some states and over run in others, we have a group that lists volunteers who transport the dogs across states so some get adopted:) Quote:

My brandi was from a rescue and shes the best behaved yorkie i have ever had such a shame some people think if a dog is in a rescue or shelter there must be something wrong with them :( |
I would. One because I would be looking for a full grown yorkie so I could know there adult size to know if he or she would be around the same size as Callie, two I feel bad for them and know they need a good home, three because I know rescues can be amazing dogs, and four I am home all the time except mostly for doctors appointments so I would have the time to work with one if they had some training needs. My mom has a rescue yorkie and he is great! Right now I am unable to have another yorkie though because Callie is still recovering from LP surgery and I could not afforded another yorkie. |

My Mr. Perkins is a no kill shelter dog. I had lost my chow/akita mix after 11 years with him. It hurt so bad that I vowed not to get another dog until I retired and then it would be a lap dog. 1 - 1/2 years later my friend told me to go to page 2 on the shelter site. There he was!!! I went to see him on my lunch hour and brought him back to my office that afternoon. It was love at first sight. They told me he was 4, then changed it to 2 but my vet said he thinks he's closer to 8. No matter I love him to pieces. |

I have not rescued from a shelter or rescue, but I was looking for an adult yorkie when I got Nigel. He was my MIL and she says she got him from a shelter. We took him ( I can lie and say my DH asked nicely) from her because she was not taking care of him. Gizmo was given to me by a friend who bought him and decided she did not want him. When I look for my next baby. Hopefully not anytime soon. I plan to look at rescues or shelters again. |
