I have a lovely 5 year old female that has had 2 c-sections and is now retired. I was advised that I didn't need to worry about spaying her as I had no viable males around and she never is around other viable males. I have an almost 9 male who is fixed as well as a 3 year old female who is fixed. I am having a new male fixed in 3 weeks who requires cryptorchid surgery and at this point the cost will be over $700. Now I am being told Tassie needs to be fixed as well with a cost closer to $1,000. I am still in shock. Also I have been told there is no guarantee she will make it through surgery. I have been through her heat cycles and she doesn't mind her panties. I have been trying to find out the pros and cons of getting her done. I am considering getting a second opinion from another vet as my vet has been kind of wishy washy about the need. Can anyone give me some advice?

I wouldn't think there would be any rush to have her spayed, just watch out for Pyometra (infected Uterus), then it'll be an emergency spay and will cost more.

$700 for the cryptorchid... depends on where the missing testicle is. My cat was crypto but his was just under the skin on his abdomen, so the vet only charged me about $20 more than a normal neuter. If it's not visible, then it's like a spay, they'll have to look inside the abdomen for it.

My MIL Sheltie is crypto too quote for him was $300.00

Nothing else is wrong with Tassie. She is small (3.5 lbs) and isn't sickly. She is actually quite feisty.

I am going to check around with the local vets recommended by some friends and see what they are charging.

I have been fortunate in receiving my kids already neutered and have only had to worry about the day to day stuff like shots etc. so I was quite amazed on receiving the quote for Gerry. It was itemized so I was able to do some research and ask questions on each area. All in all it's very confusing.

When I receive the quote on Tassie I will do the same. Thanks for the help

I recently dealt with a wishy washy vet, and it took some thought and I finally realized that if I don't trust the vet I shouldn't be going there. So I found a new vet whom I LOVE! They even know me by face and I've only been there 3 times.

Even with exchange rates I think the prices you listed above are astronomical, and would consider looking into other vets.

Best of luck in your search for a vet that you trust, trust is of utmost importance.

My thoughts too! I had to just check that the exchange rates hadn't skyrocketed since I last looked. Those charges definately seem high if it's just for spay & pre-op bloodwork.

I didn't notice where you live and I am not sure what the prices of spay and neuter (or crypto surgeries) are, but those prices sound a bit elevated in my opinion and I would definitely get a second opinion especially since you said your vet was being wishy washy. That would scare me a bit. I have found a wonderful vet (there are about 4 or 5 within a few miles of my home in different directions) and she charges a bit less than the others. Good luck to both of your babies!

Aw she's 3.5 pounds and has had two litters

I would hate to see her go through more trauma if it were me. Good luck on your research and I pray everything goes well no matter what you decide.

I am confused as to why it was safe for her to have 2 litters of puppies at 3.5 lbs via C-section but not that she is no longer breeding you say it's not safe to spay her. A C-section is much more risky than a spay. She needs to be spayed and loved as a pet. She was entirely too tiny to have been used to breed in the first place.

Couldn't agree more!!

If she made it through those 2 c-sections, a spay should be easy for her. Trust me you don't want to end up with a her getting pyometra from not being spayed, that isn't pretty and you'll then be wishing you had gotten her spayed.

I realize breeders have unspayed females around but I would not take the chance with a pet. I had a 6 month old female Maltese that almost died during her first heat because of an infection. It happens and it can happen at any time, young or old. While the male may need surgery it is not something that cannot wait. I would spay that female at a place that has more reasonable prices. $1000.00 is way out of line for a normal spay. They should have spayed her during her last C-section. Then it would be over with. Personally, I don't think that a dog that requires c-sections to deliver should even be bred.

I agree C-sections are risky business...to breed a 3.5 is unthinkable
