I didn't notice where you live and I am not sure what the prices of spay and neuter (or crypto surgeries) are, but those prices sound a bit elevated in my opinion and I would definitely get a second opinion especially since you said your vet was being wishy washy. That would scare me a bit. I have found a wonderful vet (there are about 4 or 5 within a few miles of my home in different directions) and she charges a bit less than the others.
