| Need advice please oh my Yorkie fever is bad!!! I'm a long way off to getting a baby. We are going to start a remodel in Spring so we want to wait. I'm trying to prepare, I mean I have had adult yorkies but puppies are DIFFERENT! I'm not telling ya'll anything you don't know. I'm reading, learning everything I can. I'm really trying to play out different scenarios in my head. So here is the one I keep going back to. I leave for work at 6:30am and home at 5:00pm My husband works graveyard shifts so he gets home at 6:00am and leaves at 8:30pm but he sleeps from 8:30am to 2:30pm. This is so he is able get our kids to and from school. It is a great schedule for us because believe it or not we actually see more of him than when he worked the dayshift. (because of his overtime and our drivetime. ) Anyways..... I have tossed back and forth the idea of xpens vs crate vs a bathroom. they only thing i feel comfortable with is a crate because I want to know that baby is safe and secure. I love the xpen idea but we have a larger dog with free run of the house with a dog door. I would worry to much about puppy getting out. Don't get me wrong puppy would be safe with our other dog but still needs to be supervised with her at all times just like i would supervise her with my kids. even if I put x pen in a bedroom behind a closed door i would still worry all day. I don't like the bathroom idea because who knows what could happen. I just feel like a crate is the safest place!!! So what if I got one of those huge crates of course not to huge I wouldn't want her to walk right out... LOL. but you know what I mean, one that can have a bed area , potty area, food and water. Is this acceptable for when my husband is sleeping?? Will I still have to worry about low bloodsucker if she has access to food and water for those 6 hours? What do you think??? I know a lot of you are stay at home moms or dads that get to have your sweet babies with you all day. I wish I could! Not Fair!!! ... What is one to do ?? |

| Personally I have a pen and a crate...at night she goes in her crate, during the day, while I am at work she goes in her pen. The pen has enough room for her to move around in, several toys, her water bowl and her food bowl and a nice size bed. I dont feel so bad leaving her in her pen. Its very roomy, she is safe, and she has everything a Yorkie could need. First thing I do when I get home is scoop her up and take her outside to relieve herself. She has never had an accident in her pen or her crate. She can be in there for as little as four hours or as long as six and a half. Momma has to work to make the $ so Sunny gets everything she wants and desires. Rest assured...when we are home, she has free range of the home. i wouldnt do the bathroom thing.....never worked for me and my other dogs....there is always something to get into and eat or destroy...just my .02 Bobbi

| The crate you described is exactly what I have. Like a little home. Potty area, hide-a-bed, and a place to lounge. It looks so perfect to me. However my Little Lexi Love does not like it, but she does have to use her potty pad occaisionally. They prefer a small cozy crate, and with lots and lots of blankies! |

| I bought a seabreeze kennel that came recommended on the site. They have various options including panels, heights and whether you want a top or bottom or both. They were also not expensive. Here's the link, you can let him know what your issue is and they can recommend a set up :-). It worked for us and GREATLY assisted potty training. | I have an Xpen and a Crate too. I love the Xpen because of it's multiple uses. I find the crate is awesome for when I leave the house, because I don't believe in leaving dogs of any breed alone together. That's just IMO the safest bet. My pitbull has free roam of the house, or gets locked in our bedroom. Maci has a kennel. [The pitbull came to us without a crate and has never been in one.] I find the Xpen handy for traveling so she can have place to be outside at my inlaws and a place when we go camping. I loved it for indoor potty training. I put it up if Maci seems grouchy so she can have her own space away from Leonidas. I only use it when I'm home though. I'm home 24/7 usually My Xpen is taller or at least as tall as my pitbull and sometimes I use it to keep him in the Living room [just fold it all out lengthwise like a gate vs. round pen] when I'm home and need him to mind his own business while I clean/cook/get chores done. He's EXTREMELY needy.

| I have a friend that has chihuahuas and she uses a really large crate (like great dane size...) that has room for a bed, potty pads, food and water. She's basically using it as she would an x-pen, but doesn't have the worry of them escaping it. It works great for her as she has a room it always stays in...it would be difficult if you intended to move it around the house.
