I have an Xpen and a Crate too.
I love the Xpen because of it's multiple uses.

I find the crate is awesome for when I leave the house, because I don't believe in leaving dogs of any breed alone together. That's just IMO the safest bet. My pitbull has free roam of the house, or gets locked in our bedroom. Maci has a kennel. [The pitbull came to us without a crate and has never been in one.]

I find the Xpen handy for traveling so she can have place to be outside at my inlaws and a place when we go camping.
I loved it for indoor potty training.
I put it up if Maci seems grouchy so she can have her own space away from Leonidas. I only use it when I'm home though. I'm home 24/7 usually

My Xpen is taller or at least as tall as my pitbull and sometimes I use it to keep him in the Living room [just fold it all out lengthwise like a gate vs. round pen] when I'm home and need him to mind his own business while I clean/cook/get chores done. He's EXTREMELY needy.
