when I have have Gizmo (cottony coat) out this is how the convo usually goes; person" how cute what is it?" me " a yorkie" person "what is he mixed with?" me " nothing he is a yorkie" person " does not look like any yorkie I have ever seen" At this time I try to explain the differences in coats and get a blank look. 2nd part of the convo; person " Is he a teacup?" me "there is no such thing" and now I try to explain person " well they exist people sell them" At this point I walk away.

| Oh see, I can't even go there with these people. I haven't had that conversation here in England yet but got it all the time in the states. "Is it a tea cup?" I just nod my head and think oh go away! LOL Don't think it much matters to go into it with them because they all think they know it does exist and I am not going to be the one to argue it with them.

| I know I have told this before, but.....my Father (deceased) was British and had a little dog that he carried around when there was gravel because it had such litttle feet and he didn't want her down on the rough ground. Someone said to him one time, "You need to tell that thing that she is a dog", and my Father, without missing a beat, said "t Tell her she's dog? We haven't even told her she's adopted". Good one Daddy!!!!!!!

| Marley is almost 10# (up from the 8# boy we adopted a year and a half ago. Maxie is over 6# now (up from the 4.6# baby I adopted on Valentine weekend 2010. Neither boy is "fat", although I'm very conscious of the effect that aging has on accumulated body fat. It has made me really suspect of the breed standard of 4 - 7#. If the baby is healthy, happy, and food motivated, and from a show home; he/she will likely will grow to a more natural weight that exceeds the breed standard. Is it time for the Breed Standard to change? |

| [QUOTE=capt_noonie;3690824]How about, "wow! you must have HUGE rats at your house! " THAT is funny!! If someone refers to Mina as a rat, they get a history on the yorkie breed. By the time I am done they find a bit more respect for the lil tykes. Mina wears clothes all of the time so ya I get some comments. "Why do you dress your dog?" answer: "cause I can". You could cover your eyes and say "Im so sorry but your ignorance is showing". I dont get alot of nasty comments. My family doesn't dare, the guys could end up with pink underware from the wash or a favorite tshirt could just suddenly end up waxing my car. Strangers who make nasty comments just have no manners and they dont count. |

| LOVING all the come backs! Not so sure I would be able to use them but I think I will try! I have never been good at come backs and always just turn the other cheek but a few of these and I might just find a new kind of freedom.

I think it depends largely on location. In the 'rougher' parts of the Country and 'not quite so desirable' Cities there are a lot of predominantly Staffordshire bull terriers etc. But in good old Surrey there are loads of Yorkies, Lhasa's, chi's, cocker spaniels + the 'poo' crossbreeds. The larger dogs are usually labradors, pointers etc. And yes, the Yorkies here are bigger, in general - I just think the breed standards differ between the 2 countries. You can get tiny ones, but here it just isn't the 'norm'. I'm actually amazed that people here are being rude to you in any way and I apologise for my fellow countrymen (+ women!) that you've encountered that. Normally, it's the teensy little dogs, in my experience, that get all the attention and cuddles I really hope things improve for you both. Sally + Harry x | |

I have been reading a thread on dogster this morning about why people like small dogs and it is amazing to hear the view of people who don't like them tell why.
