Senior Yorkie Talker | Really??? Im so irritated right now. I tried to just let it go but I need to vent. I went to petsmart today with our new rescue boxer, Dixie (crazy by the way to go from walking Bentley and thinking HE pulls...haha). So, someone stops me and says how she looks so much like their boxer but smaller and younger. I just smiled and then she asked how old she is. I told her 11 months. And she says with a shocked face, "OH! Ours is only 6 months and is SO much bigger". As soon as she said it all I could do was think about how often I hear the opposite when I have Bentley. How much SMALLER their yorkie is than him and then they proceed to point out everything wrong with how he looks and how theirs is how they are supposed to be. Im just shocked that this kind of thing isnt just isolated with yorkies. For some reason I thought it was a yorkie thing. The way she said it was so rude. Like shes so much better than me because she has a big boxer. Who was a male by the way. Of course hes bigger! And she said it loud enough so everyone looked right at me. If Bentley was 7lbs and we walked somewhere people would do the exact same and say how big he is. Which they do anyways and hes only 4.5lbs! I dont know why this angered me so much. I think Im just tired of people acting this way. Does it really matter what size they are? Even if Bentley was 20lbs Id love him no less and he would still be the most beautiful thing I have ever seen .He would just be a bigger yorkie. And if Dixie stays 40lbs instead of 70 shes still beautiful to us. She is no less special. They are all so much more than what breed they are. They are part of our families. Some people are just so rude. They wouldnt come up and say how big or small my children are or how their children are better looking than mine. I mean, seriously ! Im sorry if I sound ridiculous. It just really hit a nerve. |

| I think that is what I would have told her too. Well, she is special to us, and we love her no matter what she weighs. I don't know if people are just rude or down right stupid and don't know what to say. Some should just keep their mouth shut. To me every dog is special and deserves to be loved, not downed in anyway. Don't blame you for being upset, I would have been too. |

| Sorry you had this negative encounter. I will never understand why people say the things they do about other people's beloved pets. When I encounter people with their dogs, I lavish praise on the pooches because they are all special.

| I understand the anger you felt. My yorkie is bigger than most she is a 10 pounder. The other day I took her to the at&t store to get a phone fixed and one of the ladies that worked there was asking me questions about her. She told me to put HIM down so she could see how big she was. After telling me her yorkie wasn't going to be that big and other rude comments. I told her I loved all 10 pounds of my dog and glad SHE was a bigger yorkie. She still referred to Sakura as a he. I'm not sure what annoyed me the most her rude comments about my dog or the fact she completely ignored me when I told her she was a girl. She was wearing a little halloween dress and bow... I am always amazed at how rude some people can be to complete strangers. If the lady that was helping us out wasn't so nice and always helps us out when we have to go there I wouldn't want to go back to that store. |

| People are just rude sometimes. When I purchased my Yorkie, I was looking for a puppy that would grow to be an avaerage size.. maybe 5 to 7 pounds. Everyone I called that had puppies available "claimed" that their puppies would only be 3 -4 pounds when grown. So I kept looking.. I found Paisley, who's parents were the 5 and 7 pounds range and hopefully she will be too. If she's bigger or smaller, I'll still love her the same. ...and if I had a Boxer, I would prefer the smaller size. It's not like they are a breed that you expect to be big, like you would a Mastiff, a Great Dane or St. bernard or something. Actually I just looked at AKC standards for the Boxer and while it says average height at whithers is 21 3/4 - 25 inches... it also says " Proper balance and quality in the individual should be of primary importance since there is no size disqualification." You could have told the lady.... "Oh I'm sorry your dog is so big, must be why you can't bring him with you because he's too big!"

| As a new yorkie owner, I am sick of people telling me what to do, or what not to do with him. Why is it every one is an expert all of a sudden? |

| My words of advice are to "Just shake it off" and not worry about it. People sometimes say dumb things unintentionally. I know I sometimes have. A few times when out with both Carlo and Maxine, someone will say "what a big Beast". I will say, Maxine only weighs 7 1/2 pounds. (Carlo weighs around 135) |

| I'm sorry you had to deal with her rudeness. Obviously, from your story, her intent was to be rude. Sometimes people just don't think, though, and maybe don't intend to offend others. Like maybe she didn't know enough about dogs to know that males tend to be larger or about her particular breed to know what the normal size range is. I know there was one time I was in Petsmart when I saw a lady with what I assumed was a chihuahua. I say assumed because this dog was the largest chihuahua I had ever seen in my life! This little guy was easily more than 3x the standard. I think my reaction was "oh wow! Is that a chihuahua?" I in no way meant any offense by this. I love all dogs and have a soft spot for chihuahuas as my mother had one when I was growing up. He was definitely one of the nicest little chihuahuas I have met. Then the lady pulled probably the tiniest chihuahua I had ever seen out of her coat. Even for a 5 month old puppy, this girl was tiny. She was super nice and pleased to show off both her babies and we probably stood there and spoke for close to an hour. I think that, although the OP made it clear that this particular individual intended to be rude, sometimes we might think others are being rude or critical when maybe they're not trying to be. I don't think talking about size is always rude, even with human babies. I know it was routine for strangers to ask me how old my son was when he was a baby and they would often remark on how tall he was. I didn't take offense to it and don't when people remark about my dogs. I think a lot of people are just uninformed. If someone remarks how small my dogs are, I usually reply with the standard and comment about the wide variation and how big some can get. I don't always try to educate everyone that talks to me, but I try to be friendly and not take offense as much as possible.

| There's been times when someone has asked me what kind of dog it is or is it a teacup yorkie and I just say "He's a dog". It doesn't really matter what size pet you have, breed you have or companion you don't have. If someone has the opportunity and want to own a beloved animal they do so because they want and like to. Such experiences are annoying so if they're rude you can snap back with "It's a dog can't you tell?"

| It's all breeds of dogs. Someone else's is always better. That's a plus for having a mixed breed We get it about two of our dogs- our Chi and our Westie. Westie's too small. Chi has too much fur (she's a longcoat). Blah, Blah, Blah. My two mixed breeds- all positive comments. I don't know why people feel a need to be like that about purebreeds. As a side note, my brother has a female boxer that is about 2. She's just over 50 pounds and she's a beautiful girl. |

OP, I wouldn't let it bother you, people talk this way all the time, and usually its from lack of education. My beloved Bichon always got comments about how he was way too big to be a Bichon (he was about 25 lbs), but to me his size was unimportant, because his heart was HUGE! You love your furkids and thats really all that matters

| We know people say and dumb things. Some mean to be snotty and others really don't. We get our feelings hurt and vent on here. I have vented here many times. We get an avalanche of support and stories about what people have said to others. Now I understand that if a Yorkie looks anything different than the long haired perfect model used in a photo shoot, people will want to know why. We love our dogs and we can honestly say to someone, "Oh I am so glad you are not trying to be rude, yes, he/she is a bit bigger/ smaller than usual, but I can tell you love dogs and size doesn't matter, to you either." Although once when I gave this little speech, a woman gave a dramatic sigh and said, " Oh I know what you mean. I think your Schnauzer is adorable !" then she smiled and patted the fattest something dog I have ever seen on a leash. I replied "Aw your dog is cute too." I didn't ask what the heck kind of dog is that or assume out loud that, it was a short haired Pekingese, pot belly pig mix. I smiled back. I went to the toy section to ponder what kind of dog it really could be.
