Well said, when I encounter others with their dogs, I tend to start to communicate with the dog and forget he/she has humans attached to them, hahaha!
OP, I wouldn't let it bother you, people talk this way all the time, and usually its from lack of education. My beloved Bichon always got comments about how he was way too big to be a Bichon (he was about 25 lbs), but to me his size was unimportant, because his heart was HUGE!
You love your furkids and thats really all that matters
