| Puppy Day Care Jack and Josie did a short visit to the puppy daycare Saturday. I had inquired about it a few months ago after researching and getting good reviews. I had been thinking over it for a while and finally went to check it out last Thursday. I was impressed with the whole facility and workers. On Saturday I took Jack and Josie there just to get a little feel on how they would do. I only left them there for 2-1/2 hours, I was probably more nervous then them. When I picked them up I had good reports on them. I was told they never were interested in playing with the other doggies. They did get to go outside to play but neither was interested in playing they only wanted to sit in the person that was with them lap. Jack kinda acted like he might want to play with the other yorkie there but Ms. Josie was being protective and would not allow the other doggies get near him. If all goes well next week, I am going to take them there a couple of days a week. Leaving them at home alone really bothers me. What do others here do that work and no one is home with their pups? I did take the last week to work. I can take them here and there but not everyday to work. |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | I did not know they even had puppy day care! That sounds fun! Sorry I can't help more, but glad your little guys did ok. I think I would like something like that if I was going to be gone for several hours instead of leaving a yorkie alone that long. I know you'll get great feedback on here from these old pro's though!

| That sounds like a nice place to take them. They probably just sleep while you're at work anyway, but it's nice to give them a chance at socialization. That might be a nice place to leave them if you ever had to go to the hospital or something like that. I take mine to work, but we don't have a facility like that here.

| I don't have work- but I do have class and since parking is impossible after 8AM I have to take Teddy to daycare the days when I'll be in school for 8+ hours (3 times a week). The alternative is getting up at 6:00AM (which I already do) and walk Teddy for an hour...however I do not feel comfortable walking a small dog by myself that early because it's not only dangerous for me, but dangerous for him (coyotes are most dangerous around here during dawn and dusk). Teddy is an extremely active dog that requires approximately 3-4 miles of walking daily...which unfortunately I cannot achieve so early in the morning. We also do not have a backyard so I cannot play a vigorous game of fetch or something along those lines...anyways for those reasons I make a small sacrifice and take Teddy 3x a week to daycare. Teddy absolutely loves daycare because he doesn't get a chance to play with other dogs other than when he is there. Also, Teddy loves human interaction and really enjoys all of the trainers, vet techs, etc at the daycare center. Our daycare is annexed to a vet clinic and so I can schedule vet visits and just leave him there the rest of the day at daycare until I can pick him up. The same goes for grooming, etc all is done in one location. Also, the daycare is ran by dog trainers and so a part of the daycare experience he also gets to practice his manners and learns a trick or two along the way. I'm extremely sorry for the long-winded response, but I'm just offering my personal experience. The only issue I've had with daycare is that Teddy can't say no to treats and so there have been times where he's been overfed at daycare and he's thrown up at home. So just make sure that if your dogs have sensitive stomachs, or are on strict diets that you are explicit about what your dogs can and cannot eat...and the amount. Also, some daycares separate dogs by size rather than temperament. Personally, I prefer the latter. Teddy gets along with dogs of all sizes and I think that sometimes small dogs can be more nippy and aggressive than larger dogs...but again that has only been my limited experience...at least if a small dog nips it is less dangerous than a bigger dog. At our daycare I haven't had any issues of other dogs mistreating Teddy and he plays with dogs of all shapes and sizes...but of course the daycare does behavioral assessments of each dog before accepting them and putting them into play groups. Anyway, hopefully some of this was helpful or at least was able to quell some of your anxieties regarding daycare. Oh, and I would also make sure that the daycare will take responsibility of any accidents that may occur in their premises. Teddy ran into the sandbox while running around outside and he got checked by the vet and everything at their expense and he was fine.

| I actually have started a doggy day care. I never realised how many people need someone to keep their furbabies while they are at work and some of them just want a night out so they call me. I love it. It is the perfect job for me as I love dogs of all breeds.

| Sounds like your little ones were not too sure about what they should do at puppy daycare. They are kind of nervous about being in a new place. I always left my other dog home alone while I was at work. The kids would get home before me and let him out and then he would have some company. He had free run of the house so I did not feel too bad leaving him alone with just the cat. I do think it is a long day for a social animal to be alone and it must be very hard on any dog to be alone for hours at a time. Especially crated dogs. If your fur kids start enjoying their time with the other animals you should feel more comfortable letting them stay at daycare more often. I would be concerned about what other dogs are there and how they interact with your dogs. Just as with a human kid's daycare, stop at unexpected times to see what is going on. It's a good way to make sure your pups are getting the best of care. |

| A lot of people in England seem to be doing pet-sitting (doggy day care) in their own homes - I think the recession has really hit and people are trying their hand at other stuff. How your babies are when they get back home is your best indicator. Also to check out the sitters insurance/how many dogs they look after at one time etc. And yes, to drop in sometimes if you can (Harry heard me at the door, had a quick jump and a lot of licks, then went back to his new friend - brilliant!) | I also took my little guy for "play dates" and I got a similar report about Howie. He didn't want to join in the "rough & tumble" with the other dogs etc.etc. But by the 3rd visit, the report was completely different, he was right in there with the mix and enjoying himself. I only left him for 2.5 - 3 hours at a time but later this month will be the telling point, he goes for a 2 night sleep over. I hope I can enjoy this little "get away" but I know I will be phoning her to make sure he's okay and will be worrying about him. She has a great set up at an acerage up in the wilds. She only takes small dogs, 3 at a time and has 2 yorkies of her own. She has a great dog safe park like setting outside and the run of the house inside and they all sleep inside. She's a lovely women and you can tell she loves her dogs, but I just can't help being nervous about being separated from him !!!! What a whimp I am ............. |
