Go figure! I was thinking the same thing!

Actually I was thinking that. Is that bad? They obviously don't care for the dog. I would just steal, um, I mean informally adopt it.

Otherwise, I agree with Ladyjane, I would call AC. Yorkies are a very highly sought after breed, and I find it hard to believe that a young, healthy as far as we know yorkie would not get adopted before it's time runs out at the shelter. Many times when ytnr asked me to call about a yorkie in a shelter, they have always told me, there are about 10-20 people on the waiting list for him/her.

The length of time for that depends upon the state laws and also how much room the shelter has. Additionally, if the owners do not claim the dog, they usually will contact rescue or have their own adoption programs. Personally, I would rather do that than to come home and find my neighbor's dog dead in the street.

Most shelters have fines for people who leave their dogs out and often paying fines is a good incentive for keeping their dog inside!

Lastly, I will say this about euthanasia. While the thought of it is very depressing, it often is a relief for some dogs that have lived a life of hell. I am not referring to gas chambers...I think it might be a good idea for anyone calling their animal control to find out what method they use for euthanasia. I also want to say that I would rather see a dog humanely euthanized than to see it suffer after being hit by a car.
I agree that euthanasia is a very unhappy thought, but it is better than living a miserable life and getting hit by a car or suffering some other injury or illness. We are overrun with cats in my neighborhood. I'm sure they don't have their vaccinations and they just run around getting into everything. One of them got killed by a car and another one died in a neighbor's yard. I would much rather see them gently euthanized. I might also "unofficially" adopt the loose dog and find it a good home ... Animal Control considers a dog running loose a stray ...

I'm happy to get the dog a harness and leash. I just don't think that she'll use it. I have a 20 foot leash that I can bring to her. She can just tie it to a chair while she's outside.

I thought about taking the dog for a few hours and letting her sweat it out. I can then bring the dog back later and say I found him down the road. It is against my better judgment though to teach someone that kind of lesson.
The only problem with this solution is that she would just probably tie him up out there are forget him. No water and such. He would get tangled up and she would never check him. This in my opinion is inhumane no matter how you look at it.
These jerks want a dog but dont know right from wrong?? It is obvious that they have no sense in their head. That poor guy would be lucky to get away and have someone pick it up that will give it a good life. I only wish I lived closer I would take it from her and find it a better home.

Have you suggested she neuter the dog? That helps with the roaming issue, and if you see her trying to catch him again, you could also suggest basic obedience classes so the pup learns the sit stay. I could be absolutely wrong, but I fond that in these situations he is being let out because he's being an "uncontrollable" pest of a yorkie while inside. The solution is to let him out. All of that is the owner's fault for not properly training him.

I know this probably sounds terrible, but husband and I had a neighbor with a min pin that they did not properly supervise. We would see him running the neighborhood constantly, almost got hit by a car a couple of times while we were watching. We were so upset and had actually decided if we saw him loose again we were going to "rehome him ourselves". This was after my husband had taken him back to the owner a couple of times, telling him he found him running loose in the neighborhood and was worried he would get hit.

Unfortunately, right after we finally came to that decision, we never saw the little guy again! We don't know if he got hit, taken, etc. So, my sympathies go out to you in this situation. It is a hard call knowing what to do.

I have no idea what their relationship is with their dog. I don't know if it's pure ignorance or just indifference. I'll have to find that out first to learn how to deal with the issue. I have no problem being frank with her. I don't know anything about the dog - age, neuter, etc. so I'll need to find out that information first.

I live on a very private drive with only 4 houses. The chances he will get hit by a car are very slim. I'm hopeful that my next update will be about my conversation with the owner.

Thanks, I feel a little better. At least until he roams further out of the neighborhood.... I too, live on a somewhat private end of the road, but my one kitty wandered to the next street over, through the woods, one day and was hit and killed. Now all mine are indoor cats. Crazy indoor cats.

Ugh. What an awful situation to be in. I hate to see people not caring for their dogs properly. I hope you can find a way to get through to her, but, in the meantime, I definitely think if you catch this little guy wondering around outside that you should keep him for awhile. At least you'd know he is safe. You can always argue that you figured no one must be home since he was outside all alone.

If you do decide to keep him at your house, even for a little while, you might want to notify animal control that you found a little dog wandering around and you are keeping him safe at your house until the owners get home. Just as a precaution in case the owner becomes irate and accuses you of trying to steal her dog.

I feel your frustration, Karen. As you know, I have a similar situation here. Very sad.
